Has anyone seen the movie "Departed"?
Sorry if this had been asked before, but I thought it was one of the best movies I have ever seen!

Honestly, I was engrossed from the minute the movie started until it ended. An excellent movie!

What did you think?

1. it was alright
but i like the pre-cellphone version of this movie scorcese made in the early 90s, you know, goodfellas.

the departed had a one dimensional quality to it.

3. I've seen Goodfellas too, and I don't get the connection??
Is your reference due to the same director for both movies? To be honest, I didn't even know that.

he's mostly been making the same movie since 1972 with the exception of taxi driver.

47. how do, say, kundun or the last temptation of christ fit into that schematic?
I know lots of people who either on the one hand think that Scorsese goes to the mafia well too often or, on the other hand, that he should never do anything outside of mob films, but I think he covers a good bit of ground beyond the "mean streets" ...

48. goodfellas gets better and better with each passing year
I loved the departed, and I was thrilled that it won. I think it's a great movie. But I'm not sure it will hold up in 15-20 years as well as Goodfellas has. I can't count how many times I've caught that movie being played on cable as I was flipping through the channels and been sucked into watching whatever was left--even if it was some sketchy edited-for-tv version. It's just a fascinating movie.

If you haven't seen "The Departed" yet, you sure as hell don't want to know about the shocker of an ending---and Post #8 ("I just watched it last night!")gives the whole thing away. Un-fucking-believable.....

34. how was the departed the same as goodfellas?
the only similarities is that they were both done by scorcese, and they both involved mobsters.

the story lines, characters, settings, were all completely different.

that being said, the departed didn't really grab me, and i definitely don't think that it was scorcese's best by a long shot.

28. Shame On You

Do you have any excuse for divulging the ending of this movie? If you have over a thousand posts to your credit, you ought to know that you're supposed to clearly label such a post as a SPOILER, before puking out crucial details like you did.

You've ruined a great movie for no telling how many people. I hope to hell you've learned a lesson from this....

Any post that lets out critical plot details of a movie or book is supposed to be clearly labeled as a SPOILER, out of consideration for those individuals who haven't seen it yet.

41. I'm Not Talking About Any Sort Of Censorship

I'm simply saying that where key plot elements are revealed, there ought to be adequate warnings given. People who don't want their experience to be ruined should have the opportunity to avoid it happening. The short version of this is called "good manners." If you want to argue against that, be my guest.....

Big difference. Just like I avoided the '300' threads before I'd seen it, anyone with a functioning brain in their heads should avoid discussions about a movie they want to see.

Especially the ending.

Goodfellas is on a par with The Departed, but I don't think Casino compares. And of course MS should have won Best Director for Goodfellas, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. :)

22. I look at the Oscars for The Departed like the way Russell Crowe won for Gladiator.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 04:25 PM by Roland99
Gladiator was a horrible film with horrible writing, cheesy CGI, a plot so full of holes it wouldn't have been Swiss Cheese.

Russell Crowe got the Best Actor Oscar as a make-up call for The Insider.

Heck, I'd take Heat over The Departed

best picture that same year would indicate that the academy voters weren't thinking along those same lines.

40. Except "Casino" was real, and had really good points.
Sharon Stone as the coke addict/mom? Brilliant.

De Niro? A greta performance, even if the script was a little loose.

The car bombings? Really happened.

The almost-car bombings? Nearly happened to Harry Reid, who was also dramatized in the movie.

The pacing? Not so good.

The fact that they shot the airplane-landing scene and most of the residential scenes at my then-bosses house at the DI Country Club? And that he invited me to his home, to meet his family, Scorsese, DeNiro, Stone, etc.? Priceless.

They threw a barbecue. The number one actor, actress, and director in the world at the time threw a fucking BARBECUE.

12. Possible minor spoiler
A kid's soul was stolen for a cheap sack of groceries and a comic book.

I loathed the character Nicholson played in this movie.

In all other films I've seen of him, even when he played a villain or antagonist, there are always certain likable qualities to the character.

But from the opening moments of this film I despised that SOB.

I think it is a film that needs several viewings to catch how detailed the plot is.

I didn't see it until a few weeks ago, when we rented the DVD. I watched about 3 times and caught something new each time.

...But not even close to "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull," Goodfellas" or "Casino" in my opinion.

I think the Oscar wins this year were due to a) a weak year in films, and b) to make up for past slights regarding the aforementioned masterpieces.
