Were you offended by Stewart's jokes at Gore's expense on tonight's Daily Show?

There's a thread over in GD that's irritating to me with a bunch of people offended because Stewart, a satirist and a comedian, had the AUDACITY - the GALL - to poke fun at Gore.

As far as I'm concerned, if we can't laugh at ourselves, we're no better than the shitbags on the other side. I thought the jokes on Gore were kinda funny - one has to admit, Gore's metaphor was pretty limp.

How do you feel about tonight's show? How do you feel about supporting any comedian, especially a political comedian, that actually pokes fun at both sides?

As for me, I'm cool with it - especially when it's deserved.

I think such outrage is supremely silly. The Daily Show isn't a Democratic show, and Stewart doesn't owe any allegiance to Dem leaders.

9. I watched the David Steinberg interview with Jon the other night.

In it Stewart said something to the effect: "People think of us (meaning the Daily Show/Colbert Report) as being advocates for their political position. They believe we represent them and are willing to go to bat for them. But we're actually comedians whose primary purpose is to entertain. We don't represent anyone. That doesn't stop people getting very pissed off with us when we poke fun at their sacred cows, however."

The left says and does stupid things from time to time, and comedians joke about it. It doesn't mean they're dining at the WH and jetsetting on AF1 every weekend. It means someone did something funny or stupid or awkward and they laugh about it.

He's a satirist, he's supposed to see irony and lunacy first, rather than trying to sell a political ideology. Comedians can have an ideology, but when their whole point becomes selling that ideology, they are no longer funny. Like the Fox attempt to parody The Daily Show. I can laugh at a comedian with a view I don't agree with if the joke comes first (and if he or she is any good), but not at a comedian--on either side--who is really just trying to sell an ideology. They are never loyal to their jokes, and they always come across as patronizing more than funny.

Jesus. If Al Gore's metaphors are that sacred to someone, they have problems. I don't even think Al Gore himself would have a problem with that treatment.

I watch that and the thing that makes me angry isn't that Jon Stewart tried to make Al Gore look a little silly. Maybe he used a lame metaphor, but what's lamer is that this is how we do governance. This is how we problem solve something like global warming. The Republicans don't want to solve the problem. They just want to be able to put "for the children" at the end of their rhetoric on the issue of energy.

I think it shows the limits of persuasion. You can dumb down the analogy to a 2nd grade level, you can present the findings of an overwhelming scientific consensus to support your argument, but the bottom line is that none of that shit matters to these people because they just don't fucking want it to be true. Their mentality is "I don't want to be some hippie environmentalist and goddamnit, you can't make me." There's a whole forcefield of identity and desire for them that is just impenetrable by reason on this (and so many other) issues.

Enough talk. Enough dumbed down analogies. Those things do warrant parody. Enough trying to get the hard core righties onboard a societal consensus. Fuck going to breakfast with Inhofe. Get a fucking working majority and shove a sane energy policy right down their goddamn throats!
