I just installed a new printer - don't ask me something, give me a fucking medal!
Though I have to say that, with Windows XP and Hewlett-Packards' incredibleness, the installation was a fucking breeze with no problems whatsoever.

Now the trick is - can I go from this computer, in my office, and walk over to the dining room where my laptop with Windows Vista sits, and get that laptop to be able to print to this printer.

Stay tuned, because that's where I'm going next!!

1. What you propose is theoretically possible, but...
Edited on Fri Mar-23-07 09:34 PM by Kutjara
...has never been done in reality, because all those who've attempted it have strangled themselves to death in frustration long before they got the thing to work.

Good luck!

2. Really? Are you an Apple cultist, perhaps?
I got my photosmart P1000 to be seen by my laptop running Windows ME.

If I can do that, I can get a new HP to be seen by Windows Vista.

4. Vista will probably see it.
It'll just ask you five brazillion times "Are you sure? Are you really sure? Are you really, really, really sure??"

Fucking security alert bullshit windows.

It's my only complaint with Vista.

The security windows are fucking out of control.

6. I'm promiscuous OS-wise.
I run everything from Windows to MacOS to various flavors of UX. My MacBook runs MacOS, Vista and Ubuntu.

You'll probably be OK getting your printer to work, if HP bothered to get the Vista drivers ready in time.

I'm amazed that you got anything running with ME. That was truly Satan's OS.

9. It was Satan's OS! But I beat the shit out of it, and that laptop, six years old,
still runs and works like a workhorse, though it slows down obnoxiously after about 4 hours of being on. BUt dammit, I got it to stop crashing all the fucking time like it did the first year, AND got it to hang out and be friendly with a number of networks and network printers and some programs that it probably should not have been running.

But yeah, what a fucking piece of shit ME was/is. Unfortunately, I bought my laptop right in that mini-window of time that ME was available, and bought having no idea how truly shitty an OS it was.

10. Ahh, the old Win 9x slowdown!
I'd almost forgotten how I'd have to restart Win 95 and 98 every four hours or so, because the 9x kernel's memory management was out of the stone age. Win2k was a bloody revelation after that crap. Sometimes I think that ME was only produced to make 2k look that much better by comparison.

12. Ahem. Six years? That's junior-varsity, right there. I have a 1998 G3 PowerBook that
I still use every day. And with no beating the shit out of it to get it to work, either.

I just have to feed it a new keyboard every three years or so, because I type kind of heavy.

14. No, you are entirely wrong. 9 years with a stable, intelligent OS means shit.
The fact that I took a shitty, miserable piece of shit OS and forced it to work for 6 years, and continue to use it, speaks volumes for my geekiness.

Having a workable OS that works is about as commendable as having a corkscrew that - gasp! - removes corks.

Junior Varsity my fucking ass - it's fucking amazing, fucking genius, what I did.

16. OK, you deserve credit for doing it the hard way. But wouldn't you have deserved MORE credit
for having the good sense to do it the easy way?

Just asking, is all.

18. Maybe from a non-geek perspective.
:7

But I'm an electrical engineer - taking the easy way is... well, it's the civil or mechanical engineer's way, not our way.

:P

20. Oh, yeah? Then tell me if a connector's VSWR of 1.25:1 at 30 MHz is good or bad.

11. That's what is so annoying (to me) about Windows: Me, me, me, MY this, MY that, MY the other thing.
Strikes me as a bit childish: MY documents, MY pictures, MY my fucking MY.

13. That pissed me off too.
"My Computer." I know it's my fucking computer. I spent $2,000 on it, so It bloody-well better be mine. Come and try to take it and you'll find out real quick whose computer it is.

And don't even get me started on that little clippy bastard in MS Office.

15. That little paper-clip son of a bitch? I thought that MS had dropped that with Bob.
I remember the smarmy bastard showing up when I first ran Win98 via Virtual PC.

17. He rubbed everyone the wrong way.
In the end, he was turned off by default in subsequent versions of Office. He was about as helpful as a dose of the clap.

8. How does installing a new printer qualify you for that particular medal?
That is not what "plug and play" means.

Really, one can install a printer without resorting to such extraordinary persuasive techniques.
