I tuned in for the last few minutes, before the D1 elite 8 games started today, and the teams were Barton and Winona State. I never heard of the teams and was just killing a few minutes before the other games started.
I have never seen a last minute of basketball like that in my life. Wow, it was unbelievable.
Evidently, Winona was the defending champion and Barton was a bit of a Cinderella team. Winona had the game well in hand, up consistently by 5,6,7, points.
Then with about 45 seconds left, Winona was up by six. One of Barton's players, Anthony Atkinson came down and scored on a quick shot. They fouled Winona and the player hit one free throw. Up by five with maybe 30 seconds left. Atkinson comes down and scores quickly again. Then I think Barton gets a quick steal(happened so fast I may be a little off), and Atkinson comes down and scores and gets fouled. They are down by one with about 22 seconds left. Atkinson misses the free throw. Winona goes down court and gets fouled. The Winona player makes one and hits one, so they are up by two with maybe a little more than 15 seconds left. Atkinson comes down and scores quickly again, it's tied up. So Winona's best player, Melvig, gets the inbounds pass and races up court, when he passes halfcourt, a Barton player steals it, and hits a streaking Atkinson with a pass. Atkinson rushes to the rim and hits a layup to win with just as the buzzer sounds! It was wild. Most exciting finish to a basketball game I think I have ever seen. The whole last 45 seconds were riveting.
It didn't have the big-time programs, players or coaches, but it was awesome. I hope the D1 games are half that exciting today.
