Name 3 unusual items that you have in your fridge/pantry
and what do you use them for?

I've got:

Pomegranate molasses to drizzle over freshly sliced fruit;

Hempseed flour as I'm gluten free and am always looking for alternatives to (bland and boring) rice flour;

and kelp flakes, which I love to sprinkle over popcorn.

that I have is the mealworms in the refrigerator. Those are for Creature, though -- and they have to stay cold or they'll hatch.

75. Nope. it was a job I had
I looked for hatchery salmon at boat ramps (when people returned from fishing). They were tagged with a small RFID-type tag in their heads and marked on the outside so you could tell the tagged from the non-tagged. I cut their heads off and saved them in the freezer until I could get them to my office.

That's probably the strangest thing I've ever had in my freezer. I had live brine shrimp in the fridge once to feed my fish and other kinds of fish food but that's not so strange.

94. Or when you need to put together a sauce
and you know it needs, say citrus, so you just go looking for something with citrus in it -- anything that might have citrus in it? That's what the condiment shelf is for, I think.

The recipe is Orange Beef, but whose to say that Lime Beef might not be just as good?

28. Szechuan peppercorns,
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 07:21 PM by Xipe Totec
cactus fruit,
dried chipotle peppers.

The peppercorns are my favorite. We use them on shrimp stir-fry. The taste is nothing like ordinary pepper; they taste like a combination of peppermint and clove.

They give my toungle a pleasant tingle that lasts for an hour longle.

Oh, and there's a fourth; salted meyer lemons for Morocan dishes.

Cactus fruit also goes by the name of prickly pear, or tuna. It is the fruit of the Opuntia, or paddle cactus:

Unless it's stored properly (both in the store and at home), the oils in the almonds will go rancid quickly.

I prefer to do it fresh, anyway. I don't bake a lot - so I prefer to grind as needed, rather than take the chance of rancid meal. It's so expensive! :hi:

56. The one thing I haven't had since I left the nether regions
is quiote, which is the roasted, caramelized stem of the century plant:

Sold by street vendors in Mexico. It tastes like a cross between maple syrup and molasses.

69. I only have one unusual thing that I can think of.
I have a can of Festal pumpkin that I brought with us when we moved here to Idaho from Minnesota. My intention wasn't to keep it forever and ever; it just happened to be one of some canned goods that were boxed up for the move here, all the rest of which we used in a timely manner.

I later discovered, after having used all the rest of my Festal pumpkin, that Festal isn't available here. The ONLY canned pumpkin sold in the grocery stores here is Libby's. I was reluctant to open that last can, and so I just never did. Obviously I won't now, because it's about seven years old. I guess I kept it for sentimental reasons. (I do use the recipe on the can for pumpkin pie; I do keep another copy in my recipe box, but I just like to read it off that can.)

freezer-one deceased turtle. The black sesame seeds get put in Indian and Chinese food. The Lyle's Golden Syrup gets drizzled on and mixed in cereal or ice cream (and makes great gingerbread). The turtle is the late, dearly loved and sorely missed, Hector. (I live in a condo apartment and have no where to bury him, alas. He is well-wrapped.)

95. Let's see. . .
A Ukrainian blueberry picker (actually in my basement)

A Tefal Magic Tea, a super great tea make that was sold here for only a very short time

Six or so different types of soy sauce

Sorry to hear of the gluten thing. I've catered a lot of weddings, and at one the bride was gluten intolerant. The wedding cake was actually a three-tiered rice krispie square contraption, all beautifully iced and everything. Very clever and very nice.

99. Is the bentonite clay
for a candida cleanse?

The GF took quite a while for me to get used to; now it's not an issue at all. It's totally changed my way of eating (I also cut out other white foods, such as sugar, potatoes and white rice).

We have an excellent GF bakery in my city; however, I took it as an opportunity to change my eating habits (which were still fairly healthy before); I'm not just looking to substitute GF flours for things such as bread, pancakes, fried chicken coating, etc. I do have the occasional muffin, pancake, etc - but they're a treat. (considering the price of GF products!)

The bulk of my diet now is veggies and fruit, with some low fat protein.

The pomegranate molasses is divine. It has so much flavour that only a slight drizzle is needed.

homemade beer aging in the pantry and birdseed in the fridge.

I can explain the beer and the birdseed but haven't a clue why one of my kids put a rain gauge in the freezer.
