Oh, man, did I just score big time.
In case you've never heard of it, there was a British music series in the seventies and eighties called The Old Grey Whistle Test. It was kinda like America's Midnight Special and others of that ilk. I enjoyed it immensely during the two years I was stationed in England in the mid seventies.

Well, I was randomly torrenting some music collections, and I came across a Whistle Test compilation, which I promptly downloaded. Took a couple days, and I had no idea what I was gonna get.

What I ended up with was 35 classic 70s live music videos. I now have vintage David Bowie, Dobie Gray, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Wishbone Ash, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Who, and many more, doing some of their best early stuff. My prime score in this batch of heaven, however, is Johnny Winter singing Jumping Jack Flash!

I know you're jealous. I can feel it oozing from your pores.

It's been a GOOD day.

3. yep they have 'whistle test' videos on youtube
or they did last time I checked anyway. I know the BBC yanked some stuff a while back so there is no telling.

Congrats on your score!

5.  I bet.
It seems to me that the quality of the videos on youtube degrades, although I don't know how that would be possible. But it seems like when I bookmark them they just seem to get worse and look more pixelated with time. I'd never even heard of the Old Grey Whistle Test until I found some of that stuff on youtube and you are right it is a great show...I really, really hope they will leave that kind of stuff on youtube because otherwise it's pretty much lost to most people.

6. It's a bandwidth thing
I'm sure they have megabandwidth, but even that has to be somewhat limited in the real world. There has to be a choke point somewhere. The more people watching videos, the worse the overall performance at the server.

10. Cool.
I tossed my TV in the trash a couple years ago, so I don't know what's on the tube these day. Good to know the old stuff is still being remembered.

12. I watch dvd movies
on my computer- I have a good homebrew multimedia computer, and a 20" widescreen monitor set up on my coffee table in front of my easy chair. My keyboard and mouse are on a rolling laptop tray next to my chair. I have the audio wired into my digital amplifier and out into a good set of TDK headphones.

When not watching movies or browsing DU, I have about 200gb of music I can listen to.

I almost bought it, but then put it back.

I think I'll go and buy it.

21. It's very much worth it.
Once I watch these a couple times I will delete them, so I won't have them more than three or four days. If I had the DVD it would be fantastic. Having watched a few of them already I can highly recommend them RE variety and quality (except on a few there seems to be a bit of distortion from the guitar mikes).

I lived in the UK in the 70's and would stay up to watch it. Pissed my wife (of the time) off no end.
