I just fixed a leaky kitchen faucet without male assistance.
Except for the guy at Menards, the guy at Ace hardware, and one DU post. Only took me 6 hours total (both sides were leaking).

Don't laugh. I am overcoming being hardware-challenged.

1. You do know that putting a bucket under a leak doesn't count as fixing it, right?

Just kidding; leak-fixing is a big milestone in becoming tool-literate. Congratulations!

4. I was also quite proud when I learned how
to stop the drip by turning it off under the sink, but when I had to do it for both hot and cold, I stopped feeling proud and decided to figure out how to fix it... I actually know the names of some of my tools now too! :hi:

6. Nah.
But if you google "how do I" and go to Menards or Ace hardware you can fix just about anything yourself. Really.

3. So there weren't any male parts involved whatsoever,
right? If so, I wouldn't want to live underneath your leaky-ass apartment!:P

5. There is a male mechanic living upstairs in the same house
and I made a point of NOT turning the water off for the whole house because then I would have to tell him and then he would insist on SHOWING ME HOW to do it. The basement is downstairs... and there is a sink right below my sink. No water was leaking down though, I had it turned off all day.

9. If they can fix stuff in the basement,
they're welcome to stay!

10. Awesome!
That is an overused word, but truly apt in this context. I am in complete awe of your accomplishment.

11. Good for you
For a long time now, I've wanted to start a class to teach women how to do basic repairs. Not only is it nice to be able to fix something yourself but if you have a general knowledge of how things work, you're less apt to be taken for a ride by a mechanic or plumber or whatever. There are some unscrupulous people in the trades who prey on people who are ignorant of the basics.

12. It is empowering.
I have a friend who interprets for the deaf students at a vocational high school where they teach auto mechanics. She has interpreted the class so many times she knows everything forwards and backwards. People ask her husband for advice and he refers them to her!

As simple some of these things are, everyone has to learn. Men don't automatically know how to fix a leaky faucet any more than women automatically know what to do with a crying newborn. You learn what to do by asking, trial and error.

13. My little brother
is an apprentice plumber (soon to be journeyman, go bro!) and he has helped me a couple of times, but mostly I just call and ask his advice and do it myself. I always feel very accomplished when I can fix something myself.

You go girl!
