Poll question: DU living at home poll! I know I'm not the only one...How many of you

still live at home? And how old are you? (I'm 34, and NEVER thought it would turn out this way years ago. If I didn't live in California, I could probably afford rent. But not out here!)

1. I haven't lived with my parents since I was 16 years old

and the only way it would ever happen is if something happened to my hubby, I MIGHT move in with my stepmother to care for her, but only if I was single

Dropped out of high school, got my GED, and started working. Never looked back. I felt bad that my Mother was maintaining this huge house and I was the only kid left. So I split so she could move into a cheaper condo.

And after 2 years in the dorms, moved into an apartment off-campus. Haven't looked back since, although when my parents were still alive, my mom wanted me to move back home after I graduated college. Sorry mom. Prodigal son and all.

nope, haven't done that since I was 19 for a semester after I got kicked out of the fraternity I lived in :rofl:

but I don't know how people afford housing in California starting out in the housing market there...

I live in a different home than my mother and pay a bank out of my own paycheck for the privilege if that's what you mean. ;)

I represent the parent side of this poll. I am a parent of a 27 year old that's still home, and a 19 year old who is coming back this week. She wanted to be independent so tried renting with a few college friends. Part time, low paying job, school, messy roommates, and expenses exceeding her income -- all contributed to her decision to come back. Needless to say, the home she couldn't wait to get out of, she now can't wait to come back to.

We set up the computer router last night so she will be connected -- otherwise she would totally take over the computer.

11. I've been on my own and independent longer than I lived with my folks

I'd move back home, if there was one to move back to and if they were alive, just cause I miss 'em - it's no fun being an orphan, even if you are orphaned as an adult.

12. Does living in a house completly paid for by your parents count?

That's how I was from 2000 up until last year- I lived with my boyfriend in a condo that my father bought and paid for while he lives on the east coast. I recently bought my own house and he sold the condo for a substantial profit.

It's nice to have your own space.

13. I lived with my parents off and on from 18 to 27.

For 2 years with a child. Sometimes it happens. Thank God for my parents. The rule was that any of their children could move back if needed but they had to be working full time, or going to school full time or a combination of the two. If working, rent was due every friday and babysitting was not free. They were there to help not be mooched off. Emotional support was free and plentiful.

17. I moved out when I was 17

I moved back in for a month or so here and there between jobs and semesters. When I was 20 I moved 2.5 hours away, and never looked back! Now at 46, the thought of living any closer than 2 hours makes me break out in hives. I'm still not real cool with unlimited long-distance calling. I want limits!

On edit: The economy and job market really sucks, and for those who have no other choice...you have my salute! Moving back in with my parents would require a lot more survival skills and patience than I am capable of.

20. Actually, it looks like my age group is in the lead in this poll

for people living at home! (5 so far) It has actually always been a nice neighborhood, so I think my mom will still be pretty safe when I move out.

When the 30somethings are at home for various reasons, among them the extraordinary high cost of living for singles and seniors (thinking of those who are at home to care for aging parents) things are not as the economic analysts would have you believe in America.

23. Moved out when I was 18, but lived with them briefly--

a couple of months--between grad school and my first professional job. They were good about my privacy then though. Basically gave me the basement as an apartment, private entrance and all. So, I didn't feel like I was living with them.

Its an interesting situation, I lived with my family till I was about 21. Then they moved in with my grandfather and I stayed and took over all the utilities.

I have yet to move out. I was glad that my parents did re-decorate my room while I was away at college. I graduated in '05, and I've been working since then; I have two jobs now. There's no way, even with two jobs that I could afford to live in this part of MD (Anne Arundel County) on my own. That and I'm going to grad school in the fall. After that I want out though. I don't want to live at home forever.
