For those who didn't see, it was a pretty epic game. And Georgetown got a small measure of revenge for losing to UNC in the championship game over 20 years ago.
From what I could see, UNC looked like the most talented team at every position of any team I've seen this year, although I haven't had a good look at this year's version of the Gators.
They looked invincible during the early going, but Georgetown hung in there and refused to go away, although they could never get closer than 8-10 points.
UNC looked a lot faster and got a lot of penetration to the basket, and many key baskets on rebounds of their own shots. This helped them get to the line a lot, where they shot really well too (I think Tyler Hansbrough was perfect from the line with many free throws.) Georgetown, for their part, played a half court game and shot with a very high percentage. They looked like they were one little run from UNC from getting blown out at any time, but they never went away and kept hanging in.
I was really impressed by how well coached both teams were. Roy Williams already had a long track record of success from coaching Kansas before UNC, but Iwas really impressed by how good John Thompson III's Hoyas looked. They really have a lot of nice ball movement in their offense, and many great quick inside passes to people cutting to the basket, a reflection of Thompson's time playing and coaching at Princeton more than the influence of his famous Dad who coached Georgetown in 3 championship games and won one. Also he did very well to keep his team mentally competitive. They could easily have wilted under the incredible pressure the Tarheels were applying through most of the game.
I thought Thompson really got a lot of mileage out of the talent he had, which is considerable, but not as much as a team like UNC in my opinion. Whether or not he wins the championship, I can see that this guy is going to be a great coach with a great career.
Unfortunately for UNC their team went ice cold during the last 10 minutes or so of regulation, as bad a collapse as I've ever seen a top team undergo in a big game in decades of watching college hoops, even considering how basketball is a game where the opponents often have runs in response to the other team's run, and cold spells. And Georgetown got up a couple of quick baskets in overtime, and UNC's choke where they couldn't buy a basket continued.
Congratulations to the Hoyas!
