Don't remove items from historic or prehistoric sites.
I was at a National Historic Site on Saturday and I found a marble. I picked it up and put it in my pocket.

I was so stricken with guilt that I gave it to the ranger and told him where I found it. He marked the spot on a map and gave me a very stern (but kindly) lecture about leaving items for future researchers and visitors.

So if you find something, leave it there.

That is all. :)

3. Oh
Ok

Wish I still had my marbles. They'd be just about exactly 50 now.

Was this an historic house where the residents kid's marbles were on a table or something?

27. No need for shame at all
You were tempted, took it, then on your own decided to "turn yourself in".

If I was your father and heard about this it would put a smile on my face. I'd be proud of you. Really. There's no reason you should feel any guilt about this at all. :)

15. marbles
Maybe she didn't think about it being historic. Then thought about it after she picked it up and told the ranger.

Don't jump to conclusions about someone who I think we all know cares about the earth and its people. If that weren't true, why do you think she even bothered to visit the historic site.

13. years ago I was in Palenque, Mexico...
...and was walking down a trail in the jungle. I was right at the base of the ruins complex and there were still a few people around, but none close by. The ex and I were walking and something caught my eye in the pebbles on the trail. I bent down and picked up a small Mayan figurine, about two inches tall. It looked like a piece from a bas relief or something.

I said "Hey cool, look what I found!" and started to put it into my pocket, just out of reflex. Then I froze, looked around, and carefully put it back where I'd found it.

26. Exactly
I was thinking that marble would look pretty cool in my house. I was also thinking that the next person to see it would probably snake it without knowing or thinking about it. :(

22. Seriously
What kind of place was this that had marbles laying about that were of historic value. How were the marble connected to the history? I'm really curious.

Another thing, I used "laying". If you know if that is correct or incorrect I'd appreciate the correction. Seriously. I even googled that before making this response and STILL couldn't figure out which to use. I flipped a mental coin and used lay. I'll never get lie and lay straight. :(

Like I said, I'm really curious about the site and the marbles. Thanks. :)

28. I guess if it were a chicken, one could say it was "laying"
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 09:43 PM by Lisa
I think a marble would be lying. Not to denigrate glass playing-pieces, of course, since they are a good deal more honest than, say, George W.! If you said that you saw him lying, you wouldn't even have to add "on the ground", or note that he still hasn't mastered that Segway yet.

p.s. if the historic site was a former house (or even something like a bottle factory ... there actually were types of bottles that had a marble built into them as part of an automatic "stopper" device) -- there could have been all kinds of things lying around. I used to work for an archaeologist, and we found all sorts of odd little artifacts. I once spotted what looked like a glass acorn ... I thought, "no way, I'm just seeing the corner of a broken bottle or something". But after half an hour of trowel work, it DID turn out to be a glass acorn. Presumably the decorative handle for a glass lid on a serving bowl, or something.

30. Thanks for filling me in
That's interesting. Especially the idea of a marble as an automatic stopper for a "dash" or a shot.

As for the lie, lay thing. I'm just hopeless. I've seen rhymes, limericks, rules. Each makes perfect sense and I remember it for about a minute. I figure I have a 50/50 chance each time, or else I try to think of another way to say what I want and avoid the whole issue. :)

31. Every site is potentially a pre-historic site
By the same logic that Monica Goodlin uses to invoke the 5th amendment, i.e., anything I say may somehow be twisted to use against me so
I will preempt that possibility by invoking the 5th amendment. Bushists love to preempt things. :sarcasm:
