Bought any albums released this year that you highly recommend?
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 10:43 PM by mvd
Remember, I'm talking about 2007 releases.

I have quite a few, including:

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through
Adrienne Pierce - Faultline
Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked Ladies Are Men
The Pierces - 13 Tales Of Love And Revenge
Sloan - Never Hear The End Of It
Jill Cunniff - City Beach
The Postmarks - self-titled
The Fratellis - Costello Music
Dean & Britta - Back Numbers
Jesse Malin - Glitter In The Gutter
Kristin Hersh - Learn To Sing Like A Star
Brooke and Mary May's albums (they are sisters on MySpace)
Mary Chapin Carpenter - The Calling
Maria Taylor - Lynn Teeter Flower
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Marianne Keith - Beautiful Distraction

Have pre-ordered these, and expect them to be great:

Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing
Brandi Carlile - The Story
Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers
Fountains Of Wayne - Traffic And Weather

And there will be more, from Wilco to Mary Weiss to Mandy Moore.

1. I have it pre-ordered but it was also leaked
and I highly recommend the Kings of Leon's new cd Because of the Times.

I have bought other cds but none released in 07.

I am looking forward to the new Arctic Monkeys, Chris Cornell solo, and The White Stripes.

With that said, I'm really hoping Jack White sticks it out with The Raconteurs. I like the Stripes but The Raconteurs are way better.

2. I like The White Stripes a little more
But I enjoy both a lot. Will definitely give the Kings Of Leon a chance, too.

4. When's there to be a new White Stripes?
I loved the Ranconteur CD and I would recommend that in a heartbeat. This is controversial but I like the new Mellencamp and Joan Osbourn's new one. They're both a bit more country-ish that I would have thought I'd like but they make it work.

5. I don't find those controversial at all
I've always loved John, and adore Joan's Relish CD. The Mellencamp CD is his most rootsy in a while. I'll be buying the Mellencamp CD soon, I hope. I love adding to my collection, but I do have limits. :-)

6. There's a strong anti-Mellencamp group here on DU
I don't really understand it unless he's only being judged by a couple of his hit songs. I think he's written some incredible and very passionately liberal songs. Another Sunny Day 12/25 is one of my favorite songs ever.

10. Well, it could be part of an anti-pop bias some have
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 11:41 PM by mvd
I'm a pop fan, as you can tell. I have heard the Mellencamp CD online, even though I haven't bought it yet. He's in a more compromising mood on this CD for the most part, but winning Congress can do that. I think it's his finest since his Human Wheels CD.

There are more great CDs I bought this year that were released last year, like Jag Star's The Best Impression Of Sanity and David And The Citizens' Until the Sadness Is Gone.

That new Pierces CD is different, but just as good as before! It has some songs that remind me of swing, blues, dance, and gypsy music. And other songs, like "The Power Of.." and "Go To Heaven," are beautiful folk/pop like before, only a little less slick and with more eclectic arrangements.

3. Nothing I'd be willing to admit to in public.
:)

Actually it's been real slow music wise for my kind of stuff,as the first part of each year seems to be.Most of the stuff I've been getting into is from the previous couple of years, things that slipped under the radar the first time around.

Gotten a few things;

Skinny Puppy - Mythmaker
Wold - Screech Owl
Jesu - Conqueror
Massive Inch - Soundtrack For Fever Induced Hallucinations
Big Business - Here Comes The Waterworks
White Mice - Blassstphlegmeice

I'm sure there's things I'm forgetting.

And I'm highly looking forward to new Melt Banana and new Neurosis.

8. The latest album I've bought was released in '06
But it's a great one. Go get the Silversun Pickups self titled debut. It totally rocks. They are just starting to get a lot of air time right now.

"13 Cities"- Richmond Fontaine

My favorite band, and this is their best record since "Lost Son".

12. I know you're not a hip-hop fan, but El-P's new album "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" is probably...
The best album I've heard so far this year.

18. I need to check that one out.
Have you heard Brother Ali? Possibly the only albino Muslim (seriously) rapper out there, and he's got a great flow:

Oh, happy b-day, man. :toast:

22. I've heard Borther Ali featured on various Rhymesayers/Defnitive Jux artists' tracks...
But never any of his own stuff, to my recollection.

That El-P album is soooo fucking good though.

And thanks!

14. I highly recommend all the ones I listed
Mary Chapin's is her best since Come On Come On IMO! It has some of her hardest rocking songs, and "Houston" is a devastating song about the Katrina evacuees.

15. Excellent! I wish I'd known that when I was shopping for my
wife's B-day presents.

Chapin's last few albums haven't done that much for me.

shows all her strengths better than her previous CD did. Hope you like it! :hi:

21. Year Of Meteors is good IMO, but I had a feeling that..
she was capable of more. Glad my feeling appears right! I heard one song (a ballad) from the new Wilco, and it was definitely up to their standards.

24. Explosions In The Sky - "All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone"
EXCELLENT instrumental metal release. I highly recommend it.

I also really dig the new Modest Mouse, Stephen Marley, and Arcade Fire CDs. But overall this has been a pretty boring year for new releases so far.

I need some new music. My wife has been playing an Amy Winehouse song (not sure of the title, it's the "try to make me go to rehab" one) around the house alot lately. I like that one too.

27. Anything by Damien Rice - I just love that guy
He is what Irish balladeer/Rockers should sound like when they release albums and both of his albums, "O" and "9" were reviewed amazingly well. "O" was his first album which came out a few years ago, he released "9" at I believe the end of 2006.

I've seen this guy twice in concert and I have tickets to see him again in May

30. I just got the Amy Winehouse CD
she is very interesting!

Your list reads like the playlist of our local alt radio station here. Pretty nice! :hi:

oh, and the new Lucinda Williams CD! Can't forget that. She doesn't make bad cds. We are also big Fountains of Wayne fans.

32. Yes, I guess my lists can seem that way sometimes
I'm often searching for new talent on sites like cdbaby.com, MySpace, and discoveringartists.com. Also hear stuff on XM Radio. Glad you like Amy Winehouse - her lyrics have attitude, and her strong voice has a lot of range (as you can tell listening to "Rehab" and "Love Is A Losing Game.")

I'm a big Lucinda fan. Her new one isn't her strongest IMO. Will consider adding it to my collection, though. There are some albums on this thread that I'm not interested in, but I won't make an issue out of it. I appreciate all suggestions.

Good to see you stopping by, tigereye! :hi:

31. Here are three that I bought that I really liked:
Dixie Chicks-Taking the Long Way Around
Tool- 10,000 Days
Evanescence- The Open Door

I know it's a strange collection but I think each of them is a masterful CD in their own right. I recommend them all!
