‘Star Search’ winner indicted
Former “Star Search” winner David Nelson Slater, 44, has been indicted on four charges of burglary of a building - a state jail felony - relating to offenses reported by the Midlothian ISD.
Slater was arrested in January after Midlothian police said they had video surveillance tape of the singer inside Frank Seale Middle School. Police said they believed Slater may have been responsible for burglary offenses at the school that had occurred over the past two years.
Police said the tape showed Slater entering one of the school’s computer labs with a key and leaving with several computers, taking them to his car. Slater may have obtained the key while serving as associate pastor of a church that no longer meets at the school. Slater was arrested without incident and remains in custody at Wayne McCollum Detention Center under $180,000 bond.
Slater was the 1987 male vocalist champion on “Star Search,” a talent show that aired from 1983-1995. Slater received $100,000 as the title winner and also signed a recording contract with Capitol Records, releasing two albums, “Exchange of Hearts” and “Be with Me,” according to Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia.
