The "Gay Agenda" I can turn you Gay!
Edited on Mon Mar-26-07 03:21 PM by Lil Missy
Seriously, I can hardly keep a straight face.

This was a while back where I work. It's a VERY politically correct workplace where they are more concerned about the "perception" of any comment or action as opposed to what what is actually said.

I am openly gay at work. And to be fair, this workplace in the hospitality industry provides benefits for partners, whether gay or straight.

I told the lesbian toaster joke to someone on the smoke deck one day. She and several other people around laughed at the idea that one could be "converted" with a toaster.

Imagine my surprise when my supervisor called me on the carpet a few days later for telling this joke. Apparently, some idiot complained to her supervisor that I was trying to convert "innocent straight women" to the gay lifestyle. To her credit, she laughed at the notion and didn't write me up.

But, are you fucking serious???? Are there really people out there that seriously think someone would "convert" for a toaster???

I don't even know where to begin ...

6. *sigh* I wish I had known it was that easy when I had crushes on straight women over the years.
All I had to do was offer a gift. Cost me maybe a hundred bucks at most. *sigh*

But, seriously, how stupid do you have to be? And, anyway, why would you get in trouble even if you WERE "recruiting?" Homosexuality isn't illegal

19. well, here's the problem
if straight people can't tell gay jokes, then gay people shouldn't either (in the workplace). zero tolerance means just that. if she can't tell a joke that might offend you, you shouldn't be telling jokes that might offend her.

26. The moron wasn't offended by the "joke"
She was offended because she actually thought somebody was offering toasters for women to "turn gay". She probably doesn't even have the intelligence to get jokes.

14. Apparently Elton can turn people gay
I ran across this little news item today in an Anglican church site.

http://www.churchtimes.co.uk/content.asp?id=36594

THE ARCHDEACON of Tobago, the Ven. Philip Isaac, has opposed the appearance of Sir Elton John at the island’s Plymouth Jazz Festival next month, warning that he could tempt people to become homosexual.

The Archdeacon is quoted in several newspapers in Trinidad and Tobago as saying, “The artiste is one of God’s children, and while his lifestyle is questionable he needs to be ministered unto. His visit to the island can open the country to be tempted towards pursuing his lifestyle.”

(and I thought this part of the article funny ...)

Of those expressing disapproval in the letter columns of the local papers, many were more concerned that Sir Elton was headlining a jazz festival when he was not strictly a jazz musician.

20. I can only speak of personal experience
where I work. It's a "gay friendly" place. My supervisor is an openly gay woman (and very pretty). They are told to take any claim of sexual harassment, no matter how idiotic, seriously. Most times it' simply to tell someone of someone else's complaint and no other action is taken.

I think they have to do this just to cover their ass. Just like we are advised to report any injury, no matter how slight. One day I pulled something in my shoulder. I figured it would just go away in a couple days, but I got it on record that I got hurt on the job that day. 3 months later I found out I had torn my rotator cuff. I'm really glad I made the initial injury report or I might have had a fight on my hands.

Same with the harassment issue. They just have to get it on record they informed you of the idiotic complaint, just in case there is a second, and "not idiotic", complaint. They can't be blamed for doing nothing.

As far as your co-worker: Again, my own experience as a straight man tells me that homophobia ranges from "fiercely stupid" to "able to tolerate" and, sadly, it's very common. If the subject comes up they may even agree with my reasoning, but I know damn well there mind isn't changed. Their homophobia seems to be almost as innate as their own sexual orientation is innate.
I think it's going to take at least a generation for this problem, and racism, to really turn a corner.

BTW, I didn't mean the phrase "able to tolerate" as something positive. If someone says they "tolerate" me it certainly doesn't make me comfortable.

30. Yes, that's the case at this place too.
It's a very PC environment, almost to the point of oppression.

At least I wasn't written up for it. That would have really pissed me off.

I'm asking because I've always taken pride in the fact that a thread I posted years ago about gay people constantly showing up at my door, offering me toasters and savings bonds to adopt their lifestyle, has become a DU classic :D

40. the reason I started the thread
was a tongue in cheek reaction to something I observe here in North Texas - I constantly hear religous folk talking about how gay people are trying to recruit people (usually children) to their lifestyle - but it's not gay people showing up at my door trying to convert me - IT IS RELIGIOUS FOLK!!!!!! :o

39. What? Are you kidding? Talking about homosexuality in the form of a joke,
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 03:09 PM by PelosiFan
that is meant to make fun of people who actually believe that people can be recruited to be gay, is NOT sexual harassment. How would you construe it as such? Should gay people never talk about themselves at work, because to do so would be talking about homosexuality, and thus sex, and thus sexual harassment? Is that your angle?
