I saw another black widow today at my house! At least this one was outside!

But it was on my front door. It was getting ready to eat this beetle. I tried to get a pic of it but it went to hide. I saw the hourglass so I know for sure it was a widow. Here are the legs anyway. And the poor beetle!

1. that's a really unusual place for a black widow....

They're normally pretty shy and don't usually nest in high traffic areas. They're also not at all aggressive, so I wouldn't worry about them too much. I presume you live in a relatively dry part of the country?

2. I live in the south where they are found all over.

But it was for sure a black widow!!! There are 2 spiders that I know for sure what they look like and that is because they are common around here. The black widow and the brown recluse.


That area has quite a few different spider webs there since the light is right above and it is a prime place for insects to land in the web. Dinner!! I need to spray. I like that they eat the insects but I can't have a widow where I frequent!

3. Black Widows can be very aggressive

especially so when they have an egg sac in their web.

I live in the AZ desert and don't take any chances with Black Widows.

4. And right now is a prime time for it to lay eggs.

I don't take any chances with widows or recluses. But, I had to at least try to get the pic. It posed perfectly for me for a sec with her belly facing me, but I couldn't get my camera to zoom in on time and then the spider disappeared!!

11. I just had a scorpion in my bathroom closet over the weekend.

It's just one of the hazards of living on the desert.

I'd rather have the Black Widows. At least I know where they are by their webs.

Scorpions are cool! But I wouldn't want them in my house!

...but black widows are generally pretty calm and reclusive.

5. That's another thing I don't like about global climate change. If Maine

warms up enough all kinds of poisonous creepy crawlies will work their way up here.

7. I have to say that the widow is very creepy looking to me.

I don't mind spiders so much, but the widow has the big black shiny ball of a back end! I knew it was a widow before I even saw the belly! As long as it stays out of my shoes and bed, I think I am okay!

want to hang out in the doorway. They are pretty though. I don't mind seeing them around my property, but critters have to stay outdoors. I don't know what I'd do if I found one of those inside.

8. Well like I said earlier, at night when I have the light on outside

(right by the door) it is a great place for the web to get insects. But, she was able to slide under the wood where she couldn't be seen anymore. I haven't seen her since! They are the creepiest looking of all spiders to me! The Garden spider is pretty though!

10. My husband has been bitten by one of those although it didn't look

quite that bad. They are so common around here and they do like to hang out in the house!!

I bought the "deluxe kit" or whatever they call it. It has a treatment in case you do get bit by a recluse but also VERY effective traps. I have already killed 25 INSIDE my house! EEEEKKKKKK!

House spiders are one thing, but black widows and brown recluse spiders are potentially life-threatening.

Do you have cockroaches and scorpions down there too? That's the ONE good thing about the north: it's too cold for most creepy biting beasts to survive. :scared:

I don't mind them when they're in my yard (except ants: I hate ants with every fiber of my being) but when they are in my house they are trespassers and will be killed!

the storm took their hiding places too, so maybe they are refugees from here that relocated in your neck of the woods.

The pain was terrible. I would have preferred to have been stung by 6 bees at the same time.
