I lost my best friend to a long fight with cancer almost
a year ago. Keeping pictures of the two of us having fun together
out really helped me deal with the loss. You will miss him
forever but someday when you think of him you will smile.

It's almost hard to be sad. He was in such constant pain and declining health and unable to do the things he loved. SO in a way it was merciful. And he had such a huge personality, even despite physical disabilities, that everyone who knew him knows how much richer they are as people, how much richer the community is, and how much better the world is just from his all-too-brief time here.

He was a Viet Nam vet--a bona fide hero. And a truly great musician. And a staunch Democrat.

I'm gonna miss him. He made me laugh--usually more than once--EVERY single time I saw him over a 15-year friendship. Even when he was so sick he could barely open his eyes to look at you he'd deliver a perfect one-liner that would just slay you. We could talk for hours and it would seem like minutes. Hanging out with him was like a pencil sharpener for your brain.

Smart, funny, literate, brave . . . he had a way of giving me important perspective on my own life. I will miss that.

That and his jokes.

And him being the only person I know who could drink more Irish whiskey than me . . .
