Why can't my cat bury her turds?

She always leaves them laying on the top of her litter box.. when she doesn't miss the box entirely and drop it on the floor. I awlays know when she's defecated becaue the lovely aroma wafts through the house. I thought cats were programmed to bury their colonic offerings.

Otherwise, she's a good girl.

2. She doesn't like the feel of the litter?

Sometimes cats do that because they don't like the texture of the litter. Outside, they'll leave the turds on the ground if it's too hard to dig.

3. That's a very secure cat.

I've read in a couple of cat books that cats who don't bury their's tend be very secure cats.My own cat,who is kind of skittish tries to bury his near the Earth's core,while my friend's cat,an outgoing chummy sort,does the same as yours.Just leaves it top like some kind of demented sundae.

I have found SO many different behavioral modes in the 7 different cats my SO and I have been around since we got together.

One made a point of NOT using the same litter as the others: she would claw open a fresh bag of litter and stick her ass in the hole. Funniest thing I ever saw a cat do.

Sometimes, they don't like the feel of litter. Sometimes, they don't think the litter is as clean as they would like it. Sometimes, they just wanna get away from the smell. Sometimes, they just want more litter in the box. Sometimes, they just don't feel like it. Mine probably just want to get away from the smell. They are potent kitties.

I have one that's the same as yours and another that, after she goes, will paw and scratch seemingly forever. It gets so annoying sometimes I have to chase her away. "fer chrissake, it's buried already!". It's like she falls into some never ending loop that she can't get out of. :crazy:

Cats can be very fussy over tiny things sometimes.

Or, with all that gorgeous long fur, she may just dislike
getting litter in it. From the cats I've lived with,
it's seemed that the longhairs are fussier about that
sort of thing. Our current longhaired cat certainly is;
I've seen her leaning into her box from the outside
to daintily cover a turd with a tiny "queen wave" paw
motion. If she finds a single piece of litter in her fur,
she spends 15 minutes looking for more.

Whereas our shorthaired tabby, Colonel Thompson.....
Well, my current hypothesis is that he lays on his back
to poop. He's a "deep burier", and frequently appears
with copious amounts of litter in his back fur, which
he seems to take little notice of.

17. I have a cat

that scratches at the wall or the side of the litter pan until we yell at her to stop already. She doesn't seem to understand that it will never get buried that way. She is a long haired cat and she also cleans herself and leaves the hair in bunches all over the chairs, clothing, other cats...ugh!
