John Archibald. And I think of all the Scottish names (yes, from good old Scottish stock!) in the family: Duncan, Angus, Hugh, Colin, Frederick, Ronald, Ranald--most of them would sound strange on a child nowadays. But most of them would work for a middle name.

The women's names are a lot tamer: Katherine (Catherine), Mary, Jessica, Kathleen, Ellen--most of them are pretty classical names. The only "odd" one I can think of is Mamie, but even that might work. On the other side of the family, Irish and English, it's Hilda, Margaret, Bridget, Barbara, Mary (again), Gertrude, Sarah--most of them still widely used (except for maybe Gertrude and Hilda).

What's important to remember is that kids then were more serious than kids nowadays, and the more somber names fit them better. Our kids now have the chance to be kids longer and names with more gravitas just don't fit for the most part.
