I put up a feeder three days ago — the standard tube type with openings that are supposed to be good for finches, and I filled it with nyjer seed. But so far, no takers.
How long should it take our feathered friends to figure out what it is?

1. I'd give them a few more days. |

Also if you are in an area where not very many people feed birds they make take a while to learn what a feeder is. But they will get the hang - don't worry. You can go broke from this habit!

"natural" food is becoming more plentiful , so it might take a while .
You might want to try sunflower seed too--the little dinos LOVE sunflower seeds
