Heading over to Raleigh Durham soon - what's to do there?
Other than catch a game of the Durham bulls and watch them take the curse off of the Shortstop's glove...

2. Rent a car and check out the really good parts of NC
The mountains and beaches are a couple of hours away in each direction. I'm sure there are fine places to eat and drink in the area but I haven't lived there in 20 years so my favorite haunts might be gone.

Besides the Durham Bulls, you can also

Watch the Carolina Hurricanes

Dig for Emeralds

Visit the UNC Planetarium

Visit museums you might enjoy:

Exploris and Imax

NC Museum of Art

NC Museum of Natural Sciences

edit: When are you coming? It might be fun to have a DU get together! :-)

8. Stop by the Sarah P. Duke gardens
around Duke University's West Campus, which is very pretty by itself. Definitely, walk around Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. In Raleigh, go downtown to Glenwood Avenue: lots of cool bars and restaurants, as well as a few clubs. Also check out Cameron Village (a neat shopping center, not a mall) and the NC State campus close by (nothing special to look at, though... too many bricks).

If you have a GPS unit, the best way to see the area is just to drive around (avoid I-40 during rush hour like the plague). There is a lot to see, but it's all spread out.
