Who buys Red Delicious Apples?

7. My first choice

is Macouns if they are fresh. They snap when you bite them and are very juicy. Unfortunately, they have a short shelf life. Otherwise, Fiji are OK, Macs are good, Granny Smith's.

Whenever I go home to Vermont for a visit in the autumn, I make a point of eating as many Macs as I can get. The ones we get out here from Washington are mealy and bland - don't resemble what I call a Mac in any way. :(

If you take that Vermont mac and store it at room temp for a day it gets all mealy and soft.

RDs are too mealy and dry. Certainly don't live up to their marketing.

I love, love, LOVE Winesap apples when I can find them. They are called "winesaps" because biting in to one tastes very similar to a glass of wine.



When I can't find those, (usually have to make a trip into the mountains) I like granny smiths.

Red Delicious and MacIntosh have no flavor at all.

I've read recently that red delicious (ick) have the most nutrients of any kind of apple; the skin is especially full of good stuff. I eat an apple every day, but it's been a looonnng time since I've had a red delicious and don't plan to, despite the nutritive benefit.
