The highest bridge in the world (pics)

True. What you see in the composite image above is a panoramic view of the Millau Viaduct (Viaduc de Millau), a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Tarn River in southern France. Standing 1,118 feet high at its loftiest point, it is indeed the tallest bridge in the world.

Shown above while still under construction, the Millau Bridge was completed ahead of schedule and officially opened to traffic in December 2004.

4. I don't think I will Ever drive on that bridge.

Ever.

I'm not all that afraid of heights, but high winds plus heights? You bet. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is only 186 feet above the water, and there are people afraid to drive across it. (Not I, but they are out there.)

Assistance Driving Across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge: We've had several requests for information from people who are afraid to drive across the bridge. The Maryland Transportation Authority offers a driver assistance program. For information, call is 410-295--8150 (Annapolis line) or 410-537-6601 (Baltimore line). Call at least one hour prior to your arrival at the bridge. Employees will provide additional details regarding the service at that time. There is no fee for this service.

I must wonder, then, if there is a similar service for this bridge that is ten times higher.

Here's a panoramic view:

FWIW I'm a cliff diver, have jumped off cliffs as high as 90 feet, but there is no way I'd get on that thing.

17. Oh yeah
hadn't noticed. The other bridge is puny. I wonder why they built such a monstrous bridge over such a river. Perhaps this was a megaproject that was just looking for a place. A showpiece. It is quite gorgeous I'd say. I'd still opt for the ferry.

20. It wasn't so much the river as it was the valley, if I remember correctly.
Cut a lot of time and mileage off trips.

14. We stayed in Montpellier in January
And I wanted to drive to Millau.

Unfortunately we just didn't have the time. Next trip to the south of France, I really want to see this bridge, and drive over it.

21. I'm as appreciative as anyone with engineering marvels.
But that's just showing off. Seriously, I know it shaves time off the tedious drive down the valley and across the river, but c'mon!

Let's just build a bridge from Miami to Lisbon while we're at it.

22. do they have a problem with jumpers? Yet?

you'd think it might be a golden gate of france, drawing in suicidal people.
then again, the prospect is probably too scary for suicidally depressed people.
you'd have a looooooong time to think it over on the way down....

23. I walked over the Royal Gorge bridge near Canon City
Colorado it is 1058 feet high, what a view the Arkansas River was below and a train was running along a track beside the river it looked like a toy from that distance. We don't build things like that in the US anymore we spend all our money on the military and wars.
