ANTIOCH - An Antioch mother suspected of sending her daughters to steal a dog earlier this month was arrested Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Nora Vasquez, 35, was booked at County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of grand larceny and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, said Antioch police Lt. Pat Welch. She is being held in lieu of bail, which was set at $20,000. She declined to be interviewed.
Vasquez could face as many as three years in state prison if convicted of all the charges, according to prosecutors.
"She should have to go do some community service at the minimum at the Antioch animal shelter," said Donna McGee, the dog's owner. "She put her children in danger, and involving children in theft is never acceptable."
Police say Vasquez told her 7- and 9-year-old daughters to snatch the McGees' Chihuahua-Pekinese, Guppi, who was tethered to the front porch of her home on Kushner Way.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident March 14 confirmed that he saw two little girls jump out of an SUV and grab Guppi as she was playing with her "boyfriend," a black pug named Versace. Duane Thurston, the neighbor, said he was working in his front yard when he heard Vasquez yell "Hurry up and get the dogs."
On March 22, Vasquez' daughters told their principal at Carmen Dragon Elementary School that they stole the animal because their mom told them to do it.
The two girls are now being cared for by a relative, Welch said.
