New Group Proposal.....Beer, Wine, and Alcohol Appreciation
I would like to start a group that would be listed under Personal Interest. The group would be a catch all for discussion of beer, wine, and alcohol. The forum would NOT focus on drinking to excess, but would focus on appreciation, home brewing, reviews, collection, and general discussion of all things related to beer, wine, and alcohol. Most of us are above the legal drinking age and all attempts will be made to keep everything legal within the group.

I would volunteer to monitor the forum if a volunteer is needed. God knows I'm on DU for several hours a day on average as it is on my desk while I should be doing work.

My primary interest is in beer appreciation, history, brewing techniques, and breweriana collection.

The group would need 10 members who would agree to actively participate in the group.

I'd appreciate any comments or recommendations for this group.

Thanks,
Dave

2. I'm a huge beer fan
I thought a place where reviews and discussion could be posted would be fun without the threads disentegrating to stories of drunkenness

5. I agree!
There are lots of great regional beers out there and it would be great to be exposed to them.

12. Have you been to the baking and cooking group?
While it is not dedicated to drinks, there sometimes are threads about what type of beverage(s) to serve.

I am currently in the lifelong project of sampling every beer made in the world.

So, yes, I vote for that.

16. Homebrewer here, I'm up for it
Currently planning what beer to make next week.

I ordered some Sake supplies and going to give that a try too. If anyone has made sake and can give me some tips let me know.

17. I've done Soju, which is a Korean rice wine
similar to sake, but with much less refined flavor.

If Sake were Chimay, Soju would be Budweiser.

23. I dont think so.
At least, the kind we made did not use any kind of mould to prep the grain. It was much more like the beginner's recipe referred to on that site. Everything was named in Korean anyway, and my translation skills are awful.

At the time, it was fun, as I was living in Korea and wanted to learn more about the place. But I dont know if Id do it again. The final product, while much stronger than beer, tasted pretty bad. I had much better luck with beer making.

24. 500 year old brewery
the black lager and the bohemian wheat lager recipes are over 500+ years old. The brewery is in an old castle in Březnice and all the ingredients are grown within 20KM of it. The fresh water comes directly into the castle and off they go. It is one of the oldest wheat lagers in the world. If you like wheat beer this is a must. You will find the Czech beers that have not been "millerized" to be very good. For an example of "millerization" remember what Pilsner Urquell used to taste like and then have one today. It is swill now since they upped production exponentially and lost the taste along the way.
Real Czech beers are a lot smoother and less sweet than your Belgian or German counterparts but they are very drinkable. Podkovan is another nice Czech beer that has not been ruined so far with the influx of outside cash to the Republic.
Cheers!

25. I'm more an an ale (trappist ales are the fav), but I'll add ot to the list
There is a pretty decent beer store here in town and I have an ever growing list of beers to try. I got spoiled on trappist beers on my last trip to Germany and Belgium a few years ago.

Though I think I'm going to have to stop drinking beer as it aggravates my gout (I hate this getting old crap).
