I'm not looking to spend any money, and, of course, the search needs to be done legally.

2. I would start here...

I really doubt you will have any luck finding this info for free. You could check local papers for birth notices, obituaries, and marriage notices.

Honestly, do you want this info for nefarious purposes? If you really need to know you should be able to ask them for it.

3. No, I don't want it for nefarious purposes.
And I am on the verge of just asking.

But I could have sworn on a stack of Bibles that I found a search engine that would identify date of birth for free as short a time ago as last fall.

4. Sometimes when
you do a regular name/address search, it'll list age too.

5. This one might work if the person doesn't have a common name, you know
their age, and where they got their driver's license. I checked it using my name, and it had the city where I lived 20 years ago when I got my California driver's license.
