Yet another college binge drinking death in my area...

Gary DeVercelly, the Rider University freshman left comatose after a night of binge drinking at a campus fraternity house, died Friday morning at a Trenton hospital, authorities from the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office have confirmed.

Authorities said Friday morning that detectives from Lawrence Township police and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office are continuing their investigation of whether fraternity hazing played any role in DeVercelly's death.

DeVercelly reportedly drank more than half-a-bottle of vodka in just 15 minutes while partying at the fraternity house. Rescue personnel found DeVercelly in cardiac arrest and used CPR to revive him before transporting him to the hospital.

Both colleges are less than a 10 minute drive from one another as well...it's just a strange coincidence that both of these incidents occurred 1 year apart almost to the day

1. Not to sound coldhearted but...

the thining out of the heard is eventuall and sometimes necessary. Condolonces to his parents but a little common sense goes a long way and it's obvious that this kid decided to forgo using any that night.

It could've been any one of us during those freshman college days. Alot of us have done that and even worse. We were just lucky.

3. Just MHO, but I think that the 21-year-old drinking age, and the "forbidden fruit" mystique

for the young surrounding alcohol in our culture (due largely to the ridiculous drinking age) are LARGE contributors to binge-drinking among the young.
I think in cultures where kids get exposed to alcohol at an early age by the glass of wine consumed at the dinner table and where the drinking age is more reasonable, that binge drinking is less of a problem.

Raising the drinking age to 21 was short-sighted I fear. Maybe 19, to help keep it out of high schools, but not 21. College kids are going to drink and when they have to down it quickly before they go out or
sneak it somehow...I think it sets them up for binging and developing problems.
