5. Flamewar over whether it's acceptable to call people "spaz."
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 03:36 PM by Kutjara
I maintained that it was not, because the word derives from "spastic," which itself derives from the muscular spasticity that sufferers from cerebral palsey have to endure (until very recently in the UK, Australia and other countries, "spastic" was the official term for someone with CP). Therefore, I went on, "spaz" is a slur that compares the target to someone with CP, and not in a flattering way.

I was thoroughly torched for that one. It happened about three days after I joined DU and almost made me leave, on the grounds that this was truly not a progressive site. Fortunately I stayed, and had my suspicions confirmed. ;)

45. It's a grey area where the intent is not necessarily in line with the word's origins
In other words, people who say "spaz" aren't thinking of CP, but the perception of someone who knows the word well will think they are. To me, those people should learn they are offending some people and use a different word if they want to avoid trouble--in this case it's less anybody's fault than when someone deliberately uses the word to evoke the bigoted origins. Like when grade schoolers say "gay" to mean "stupid"--not necessarily deliberate homophobia, but they need to be educated. Or when someone loves the Army of Virginia battle flag--the intent may be fine and non-racist, but people need to understand what perceptions they are creating.

6. If a tenant's cats damage your property, is it OK to blast them with a shotgun?
That is, are you, as the property owner, justified in blasting someone's pets into little pieces because they clawed your curtains. As you might imagine, I argued that evicting the tenant was a much better option, but got into an extended flamewar with someone who insisted that blasting the kitties with a shotgun (as had actually happened in a tenant dispute) was the preferred manner to deal with the problem.

I wish I was kidding about this. I really do.

14. Without a doubt, the strangest flame war I was involved in was over Mariah Carey
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 03:49 PM by BurtWorm
and American Idol style melismatic singing. My position was that it was ruining the sound of the human voice for me. My "opponent" (who would not let go) accused me of being like parents in the 1950s, just not getting hip to this rocking and rolling racket on the radio. I tried to explain to him that rock and roll was rebellious, but this shit is straight out of the corporate can. It went back and forth and back and forth getting louder and meaner and finally he was telling me I should see a therapist to understand why I felt such hostility to Mariah Carey.

That was in the Lounge, by the way.

38. Childbirth with or without painkillers. Some guy put me on his ignore list cuz
he and his wife were zealous about NO painkillers in childbirth. My daughter had a dreadful time with her first childbirth and should have had an epidural but the doc said "too late!" and I've been angry ever since. This guy and I had a real brawl over it. He was mad as hell at me and I thought he was way too supercilious.

Which I didn't rally mean to do but that attitude just got to me...

48. I completely understand.
The birthing experience is really so individual that comparisons just can't be made from woman to woman. I wouldn't knock someone who chose medicated birth and I wouldn't knock someone who chose unmedicated. I've done it both ways, and frankly, there's a lot to be said for an epidural when you're birthing a ten-and-a-half pounder! :)

That's a big baby!

I had smaller babies but I wised up with my second and third. I just had no patience with people who claim spiritual perfection with physical suffering in childbirth. I think we should all have the pain medication we need so that we don't feel pain at all. If people want to go out and be martyrs, fine, just don't do it and preach to the rest of us about your superior morality.

But, don't get me started...

All other things being equal at the moment, they won't be when she's fifty and you're seventy-one. My STBE is ten years older and a very energetic man, but recently he's begun to show signs of his age and it disturbs us both... not his aging, but the difference in our energy levels, choices for entertainment, etc. None of this was apparent when I was 25.

82. What's really dumb is the claim that it was an "effort to censor people"
It was an informational thread on the history-- with pitchers!-- of a word.

What's really dumb is the inability of some to take it or leave it. That's dumb.

Attacking what ya don't understand. Definition of dumb.

Rounding up a gang to disrupt and starting a thread to announce it: dumb

Hijacking a thread with mob bullshit and claiming it was a flamewar: dumb

Crowing about it for months: dumb

Crying about being blocked after acting like that: really dumb

Being proud of all that shit: pathetic

60. Cornflakes,
breastfeeding (I was actually told on here that I had damaged my child by breastfeeding them since formula was created to be healthy and that I was also throwing all the hardwork that feminists of the past done in the toilet. My answer: by nursing I was giving a big old middle finger to the corporations.)

Drugfree childbirth (I said I had been overmedicated and wish I could remember something. I was informed that I was stupid and that drugs are there for a reason-to make you forget.)

Fat Actress-I don't know how I got involved. I think I said something like I hadn't watched it yet but heard it was funny. I was torn up in a pm.

from the same sex would make advances on him. That is why he didn't believe on same sex marriage. That was the oddest, most ridiculous thread I have read.

74. Ah yes, a position that makes sense. Pledging to live with someone
and getting freaking married to them is obviously the kind of thing that gets people to make advances to all sorts of people.

And of course, if someone made advances, it would fucking kill someone to say "no, I'm straight as a ruler I'm afraid" or similar.

Gragh. Oh well, back to laughing at the fools elsewhere.....

Incidentally, your description sounds very accurate.

72. The taxonomic classification of apes
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 11:02 PM by Redneck Socialist
I shit you not. In the Gungeon of all places.

The thread was ostensibly about a murderous deer hunter, but it quickly went off the rails and devolved into a debate about the relative merits of the 30-30 as a deer hunting round, Diane Feinstein, boa constrictors and the correct taxonomic classification of apes, chimpanzees and humans, all in less than 100 posts.

I wasn't the most flamey by any standards but it certainly was the oddest. Even by lounge standards it was pretty fucking bizarre.

On Edit: I also got flamed for suggesting Yankees fans were brain damaged. Given that opening day is right around the corner I feel that it is appropriate to dredge that gem up.

One should apply the Stand Right/Walk Left rule to all moving causways, both horizontal and vertical.

87. Haha, I remember that.
Goddamn, that was funny. But after being in DC, I can see how people get pissed off with "standers," especially those who do not walk left stand right, or whatever it is. High traffic escalators like those in DC, NYC, etc. definitely need rules.
