Does anyone care why someone edited their post?
I'm just curious if you guys ever read a post and go, oh, they edited it, I wonder why?
I noticed recently that people like to explain why the do this. I'm not being an asshole, I promise. I'm really curious.

1. Yes sometimes
Mostly I do when there are errors in spelling or something. Sometimes I add something I thought of later to say. Or because I decided against what I said originally- it was too inflammatory or something.

2. No. It's typos or thinking of something else to add.
Can't imagine who needs to know that.

3. Nope...
I don't care. Figured it was spelling or grammar since that's why I usually do it. The final product is what they intended so that's all I care about.

I do it all the time because I type too fast and fuck it up.

5. I care..
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 08:42 PM by Omphaloskepsis
I'm not sure why I care.

But I consider it courteous to explain the edit. I usually only make edits for typos and grammar mistakes. For mistakes with content I will reply to my own post to clarify.

edit :: fixed grammar.. I need a nap.

7. But see...
If people know (and love) you like we do, we already know this and don't need it explained.

9. Not at all
If I notice, I usually attribute it to spelling, grammar or an addition to the expressed thought or idea.

Even if it's not that, I don't care. I often wish I had the edit function IRL. ;-)

If I edited something at work I would be punished by auditors. Here -- no penalty.

11. Edit all the time here
and see no need to explain why. Usually it's typos, misspellings.
(damn you, SpellCheck for not just automatically jumping in and doing the job!)

I play piano.
A typist I am not. :P

12. I've had a few occurrences
of people going back and editing things out AFTER I've replied in the middle of a heated debate, taking out the offensive, ridiculous, or silly things they've said, and then claiming that they never in fact said them. It's pretty silly, but very very annoying. I've also been accused of changing things in my posts despite the fact that I try not to edit after someone has replied unless it's spelling or grammar, so depending on the discussion, I care, or I will explain.

15. If it's typos or spelling I say nothing.
If it's an afterthought and sounds a little out of place at the end but it's too much trouble to fit it into the body of what I said, I'll mention that it's "on edit:".

Sometimes people accuse others of editing out their stupidity or maliciousness.

edited for irony :hide:

wow, the first edit was at 3:30 (just so you know what time it was)

I figure they said something really nasty and then edited it, so I just imagine what it was and reply to that :P

I mean then it is really kind of funny isn't it?

21. Doesn't it though...
I always try to piece together what might have been said by responses, but when a subthread is deleted it is really hard to do.

but then again, i can make up what i think it said and go from there.

22. I care...deeply.
What if they edited their post because they suddenly decided not to say something rude that they were thinking? I certainly wouldn't want to have anything to do with someone who thought rudely on a regular basis, would you?

And those who edit for spelling...well, we've got to be careful what sort of spellers we asosiate withe, doen't wee?

Come to think of it, if someone has edited a post, but not explained their actions, doesn't it make you wonder if they're hiding something? Maybe they secretly hate America.
:yoiks:

23. Hell, I've had to edit one word posts before.
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 11:25 PM by Kutjara
My brain outruns my poor fingers and I usually make a load of typos. I'm such an obsessive grammar and spelling nerd that I have to go back and clean up the wreckage. I don't usually say that's the reason I edited, unless I've changed the meaning of the original post.

24. I think it's polite to explain the edit if someone has already replied to the post
That way, subsequent readers can clearly see what the responder was replying to (assuming, of course, that people actually care to read through a thread before blasting in at the bottom with their own flame & snark...)

25. It's simple courtesy.
Was it edited for content or grammar? If it was edited for content, then that may mean that some of the pre-editing subthreads are invalid. If it was edited for grammar, though, I know that the editor is not incompetent, but merely more inebriated than I am right now, and conscientious to boot.

Then again, I'm an English teacher; shit like that's what I live for.

Edited for grammar -- probably -- in a few minutes. After I've discovered a hastily written dangling modifier or something. After the OCD spell has passed and I'm feeling better.

Screw it, I'm off duty. Fuck up the English language all you want.

27. I'm usually curious, yeah.
And when I edit, I usually give the reason. I just imagine people wondering, "Now did she edit out something stupid, or just obsessively fix a typo?" Whether or not anybody does wonder that, the explanation just seems to make it complete.
