When the judge finished speaking, 77-year-old Raymond Devine approached his wife, Marilyn. He leaned in and spoke softly.
"What happened, honey?" Mr. Devine asked, careful to follow instructions not to touch the prisoner in the courtroom.
"I don't know," she answered in a barely audible voice. Then she said she "flipped out."
Gray hair framed Mrs. Devine's worn face. Her outfit -- gray sweat shirt, gray sweat pants and gray sneakers -- made matters seem more gloomy.
At 74, Marilyn Edna Devine of Baldwin Borough yesterday became one of the more unusual accused criminals in the commonwealth: a female septuagenarian charged with armed bank robbery.
After a short conversation, the diminutive couple, who have been married 32 years, went their separate ways; he to figure out how to get his spouse out of this mess, she off to jail, shuffling because of her leg irons.
Police said Mrs. Devine wrapped a black and gold scarf over her face and wielded a handgun yesterday morning when she robbed two tellers at the National City bank in West Mifflin before leading officers on a 45-mph chase.
A Baldwin tow truck driver eventually blocked Mrs. Devine's path, allowing police to arrest her.
