Morrison was a hottie. No one on earth has ever looked better in leather pants. Well, before he got fat anyway.

Great poet.
Great music.
Sick little mind on Morrison...which I love. I hate "plastic"....and I'm 53.

I could listen to The Doors all the time.

Don't make sexist assumptions. It's not allowed here and I actually know more guys from my era...hippies...who like The Doors than women of any orientation.

46. It's a sexist assumption unless you can back it
With many double-blind surveys, studies, tests, papers, articles, etc. Otherwise it's a personal assumption on your part and it is sexist. It is the very definition of a sexist assumption. That is what that means. You are assuming something based on a person's sex. That is the actual definition.

When it's really an assumption on your part. I know more guys who like The Doors than women. See, I said, "I know". I didn't state it as a general fact. I stated it as personal observation of my world.

54. I really don't see why you're so worked up over this
A lot of women find Jim Morrison attractive - many of them heterosexual - there's nothing wrong with that. I know far more dorky men who like the doors than women but, in my experience, women say that think Jim Morrison is hot - if they like the Doors or not.

Although being a person of the female persuasion I might not be in a position to judge her "hotness" accurately. But Morrison was definitely hot.

And if your audience is mostly stoned females, you can get away with a lot. I'll always like the Doors, maybe for no good reason. Even though I was a music major.

While they're not my favorite band from that era, they made their mark. I don't think Jim Morrison had the greatest voice, but his music has it's place.

50. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion...
on this subject, mine is totall opposite of yours.

Let's swim to the moon, uh huh
Let's climb through the tide
Penetrate the evenin' that the
City sleeps to hide
Let's swim out tonight, love
It's our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive

Let's swim to the moon, uh huh
Let's climb through the tide
Surrender to the waiting worlds
That lap against our side

Nothin' left open
And no time to decide
We've stepped into a river
On our moonlight drive

Let's swim to the moon
Let's climb through the tide
You reach your hand to hold me
But I can't be your guide

Easy, I love you
As I watch you glide
Falling through wet forests
On our moonlight drive, baby
Moonlight drive

Come on, baby, gonna take a little ride
Down, down by the ocean side
Gonna get real close
Get real tight
Baby gonna drown tonight
Goin' down, down, down

62. Not the biggest fan here either, but
they did provide me w/ a pivotal experience as a kid I will never forget. Namely being home sick from school and hearing the long version of Light My Fire. When the guitar solo kicked in, it really transported me. Then I look for moments elsewhere. I didn't so much find it in their catalog, but I did find it in Dead songs such a Playin' that, when executed well, have that perfect sense of slippage and stepping off into some void. Just my personal tastes of course, but that Doors moment is conjured every time I hear the long version on the radio....

september and school had just started. it was early morning and pouring rain, really coming down in sheets and thunder and lightning, just a totally awesome storm. every morning before homeroom we would get off the bus and gather in the cafeteria and hang out. i was the new girl you see, an observer, kinda shy and quiet (i was always the new girl but, THAT is another story for another time)

anyway, the audio club had started a radio station wcsh and they were spinning the usual rock and roll when the bell rang for homeroom. everybody started piling out in groups of 3 and 4 with the ocassional couple to be seen with him carrying her books (remember that?)

as the crowd thins out the floor to ceiling cafeteria windows reveal the thunderstorm in all its torrential glory...the dj lets go with a song i had never heard before. i stood frozen at the window mesmerized the music and nature became one and i with it. i was late to homeroom that morning...

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house were born
Into this world were thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm

Theres a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah

Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house were born
Into this world were thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm

and because of that one moment in space and time i will always like the doors:patriot:

81. Great post wildwoman...
I have a similar memory of first hearing that song. It still can give me the creeps when I hear it late at night driving alone.

I am moved by the coolness of that post, really. I know you said the song had changed your life, and I'm glad to get to read the story of that moment for you.

73. I was eighteen 22 years after Morrison died
and I had a total obsession with everything The Doors. I read every book ever written about them, listened to their albums constantly, and even modeled my hair after Morrison's. That should tell you something about the power of that band, that they could still pull people in long after they disappeared from the charts. I've long since gotten over my obsession with them but I still find their music to be very unique, creative, powerful, and haunting.

A great band in every sense, though perhaps not for everyone. If you don't like 'em, then that's cool.

74. Damn right....
The most overrated band in the last 30 years.

Stoned and nonsensical in all senses. Even their OK tracks are simplistic and like King Lear.

Bullshit band that should have died in their first year.

75. Forget the Doors, The Who sucked the most
Which is a shame-all four lads were very talented musicians, they just couldn't write anything catchy. "Pinball Wizard?" "Won't Get Fooled Again?" Gimme a break, it is about as noteworthy as anything by GG Allin. The Doors have several tunes that get stuck in my mind. "Hello I love You" "L.A. Woman" are my faves.

However, I do like Eminence Front....that song kicked ass.

Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 09:12 PM by mvd
In fact, I think all of these are worthy: The Who, The Doors, Queen, The Eagles, Aerosmith..

I'm a supporter of classic rock, and will just say that tastes differ. What you think isn't catchy, I find quite catchy.

83. Don't see much to discuss
You hit all the critical points in your OP. Oh yes, and it was more about Jim's hotness and charisma than his "poetry," you probably should have said that up there too.

...So that's what Jessica Simpson would be like if she were male and alive in the 60's.

87. I only bought one of their albums, and that was for 25 cents at a flea market.
I guess that means I wasn't a fan, either, but there were many much suckier groups than the Doors.

90. Jim Morrison is incredibly overrated
As I said in the other Doors thread, I was (and still am, really) a huge Doors fan, but I've never been an acolyte in the Cult of Jim. Yes, I bought the biography, and the book of poetry (which sucked), but the Doors were more than just Jim Morrison's backing band.

Question.

How old are you?

Were you there when the Doors broke into the music scene, and old enough to appreciate their social significance?

100. Morrison was one of the best vocalists in rock.
A great singing voice. One of my absolute favorites. The first album was excellent.

The Doors were also a unique band with their own unique sound, which is very hard to find in the highly repetitive and clone-like world of rock.

I think they went depressingly commercial late in their career, but they were on their downward druggy slide.

"Hello, I Love You" is embarrassing.
