Without getting too artsy about it, my vote goes to Skylarking, which is a Pop masterpiece.

If I were gonna get artsy about it, then I'd probably say "The Off-White Album" by Martin Newell.

If I had to chose from the records listed by Whitacre, I'd say "Fun House".

In any case, I decline to vote.

I don't like Blur.

"Loveless," "Live at Leeds" (one of the few albums for which I prefer the CD to the record -- the full concert is on CD), and "Marquee Moon" are definitely top-100, maybe top-50 material; but top 10? I think not.

I prefer "Smiley Smile" to "Pet Sounds."

"Loveless" is probably one of the best albums to ever come out of the '90s...no one has ever come close since. Not even Kevin Shields.

"Marquee Moon" is certainly a front-runner, and you can't argue with Television's NYC punk scene credibility.

Live at Leeds speaks for itself.

Smiley Smile is a wildcard because of the nature of that beast.

Among the pack you listed, I think these guys are far more worthy choices.

"Double Nickels on the Dime" by the Minutemen. It's only obscure if you've been living a healthy, active, productive life for the last twenty years instead of haunting indie record stores much the same way Keira Knightley haunts my fantasies.

My FAVORITE album is "Surfer Rosa." It's the Pixies' best work, and I first heard it at a very significant time in my life. It has meaning for me that goes beyond its (considerable) aesthetic merits.

That said, I voted for "Forever Changes." I think it's as close to a flawless album that we've seen in the rock era. Even the song Bryan MacLean sang ("Old Man") is good (much better than "Orange Skies"). In 1967, when everyone was talking about "Sgt. Pepper" (IMHO, the worst Beatles album ever, the ONLY Beatles album I can honestly say I don't like), THIS is the record they should have been talking about.

"In the Aeroplane..." was my favorite album of the past decade and a half; like "Surfer Rosa," a defining moment in my appreciation of music. "Pink Flag" was punk's best album, closely followed by Alternative TV's "The Image Has Cracked." No list is complete without Sly Stone, and I am the biggest Gainsbourg fan north of Mrs. Koolzip.

"Blue Roots" really cuts through a lot of the crap of the early '90s (perhaps because it echoes back to the '30s); and Don Howland is a big Reds fan, so I had to include him. The Stooges, the MC5, and the Velvet Underground were the most important non-Sly bands in the late '60s and early '70s, and "Fun House" is the best record by any of them (though "The Velvet Underground" -- VU's third album -- and "High Time," as well as "Kick Out the Jams" are close behind).

Harry Smith's Anthology is the single most indispensable piece of any music collection. If you don't have it, buy it. I am serious about this. If you TRULY love American music, you MUST own the Anthology.
