Stem cell research help needed....
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 04:15 PM by Zookeeper
Hi, Lounge friends!

You may know that I have a child struggling with Type 1 diabetes.

I'm asking for your help in getting the word out about the difference between the two stem cell bills being debated in the Senate.

S.5 (Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act) would increase funding and stem cell lines for research.

S.30 (The Hope Offered through Principled, Ethically-Sound Stem Cell Research Act. :eyes: ) is a sham introduced by Norm Coleman to create the illusion that the theocrats have a heart. It would actually kill additional stem cell research.

Please call or write your senators in support of S.5 for stem cell research and the hope it offers to many suffering from incurable and debilitating diseases.

Here is a link to StemPac's e-mail letter:

Thanks! :hi:

2. Thanks, Southpaw!
Unfortunately, S.5 didn't pass with a veto-proof majority.

Even worse, S.30, did pass. It limits stem cell research to "naturally dead" embryos...whatever that means. :grr:

I suppose the next move is lobby Chimpy, but we know how receptive he is to the will of the people.

7. Naturally dead...
means result of a pregnancy not ending in birth or abortion...that is, only those ending in miscarriage or (not applicable in this case (I think)) still-birth.

Because anybody really wants the job of saying..."Hey lady, your pregnancy and your dreams of a future lifetime have just come to a sad, screeching end. Mind if we harvest your embryo for its' stem cells?"

More proof that Republicans are ghastly people.

8. Yes, and there's the question of whether or not....
that miscarried embryo is the most appropriate source of cells, given that it may be genetically defective.

"Ghastly people." That sums up just about all of their policies.

6. We need to get the votes to override the S5 veto and dull W's "moment of "caring""
when he signes the sham S30 into law.

Most Senators who voted yes on S5 also voted yes on S30 so they DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. Please tell them!

So that ZK's daughter is spared what I've been through... :kick:

9. I wonder what the possibility is of changing the minds of...
a few Senators to make S.5 veto-proof?
