Okay, I officially love "Scrubs"
I have been watching it for a while now. Since I got to Japan, via downloaded torrents. It's been pretty entertaining, but tonight I watched the "musical" episode. How can something be so schmaltzy and corny, and yet still make me get all misty-eyed?

What a wonderful cast of people. I really appreciate what they have done.

It's my favorite TV program since "Six Feet Under" left the air. (I don't think ANY TV show will ever hold a candel to that one...)

Oh, and hi to the lounge people. I ususally just post in GD. Not any sort of preference - I'm just too lazy to keep up with more than one forum.

PS - Rosario Dawson is da bomb.

1. I love that episode. I don't think it's schmaltzy at all. I think it's deeply affecting.
It would be schamltzy if they had done some other song. But the title and sentiment "I'm Waiting For My Real Life To Begin" is almost inexpressibly sad.

It always gets me welled up when I see it.

5. I think you're talking about a different "musical" episode.
I believe the OP is talking about the one that was written in part by the folks that wrote "Avenue Q." I don't believe the song you refer to (a Colin Hay song, BTW) is featured in that episode.

7. The one I watched was the one with the woman with the anuerysm...
...who heard music and everyone talking to her was singing.

It was the one where JD and Tukleton (LOL) profess their undying "guy love" for each other in song.

And yes, it was deeply affecting.

Could any cast of characters be any more lovable?

15. I think that's from the second season (maybe third) and it's one of my favorites.
The second appearance by Brendan Fraser in season three is my all time favorite.

Plus the music they use in episodes is pretty excellent. :-)

3. Yep, a wonderful show. And it's very much like when I worked in a hospital...
Okay, TECHINICALLY it isn't as accurate as ER, but emotionally, that's what it's like working in a hospital.

this show on the TV Guide Channel, I forget what it was called, but John C McGinley was the guest (which was the only reason I was watching it) and the hosts asked him, "What's the difference between Scrubs and Grey's Anatomy?" To which McGinley replied, "One's been nominated for Emmys, the other one sucks." That was awesome.

6. First time I saw Scrubs
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 01:50 PM by supernova
I knew, KNEW immediately that whoever wrote had logged serious time in a real hospital.

The interplay between the chief of staff--> attending ---> residents ----> med students is just hilariously spot on. Meanwhile, the nurses do most of the heavy lifting.

The best thing about it, to me, is that it shows you WHY, exactly, the Doc with the biggest asshole 'tude, is also the doc who cares the most about his/her patients.

All of this while getting me to nearly asphyxiate myself  for 30 minutes. :D

edit: I worked at Duke Medical Center for four years, so yeah, A LOT about Scrubs is soooooo familiar. :D

8. "Guy Love" lyrics, for those who're interested
And yes, it was a kick-ass episode of a kick-ass show. :D

Guy Love

(J.D.)
Let's face the facts about me and you,
A love unspecified.
Though I'm proud to call you "Chocolate Bear,"
The crowd will always talk and stare.

(Turk)
I feel exactly those feelings, too
And that's why I keep them inside.
'Cause this bear can't bear the world's disdain,
And sometimes it's easier to hide,
Than explain our

(J.D. and Turk)
Guy love,
That's all it is,
Guy love,
He's mine, I'm his,
There's nothing gay about it in our eyes.

(Turk)
You ask me 'bout this thing we share,

(J.D.)
And he tenderly replies,

(Turk)
It's guy love

(J.D. and Turk)
Between two guys.

(Turk]
We're closer than the average man and wife,

(J.D.)
That's why our matching bracelets say Turk and J.D.

(Turk)
You know I'll stick by for the rest of my life.

(J.D.)
You're the only man who's ever been inside of me.

(Turk]
Whoa, I just took out his apendix.

(J.D.)
There's no need to clarify,

(Turk)
Oh no?

(J.D.)
Just let it grow more and more each day.
It's like I married my best friend,

(Turk)
But in a totally manly way.

(J.D. and Turk)
Let's go!
It's guy love,
Don't compromise,
The feeeling of some other guy,
Holding up your heart,
Into the sky.

(J.D.)
I'll be there to care through all the lows.

(Turk)
I'll be there to share the highs.

(J.D. and Turk)
It's guy love,
Between two guys.

(J.D.)
And when I say, "I love you, Turk,"
It's not what it impies.

(J.D. and Turk)
It's guy love
Between
Two
Guys

9. I'm so addicted to that show.
Scrubs and House (I must have my Hugh Laurie fix every Tuesday!) are the only two medical shows that I watch.

I always thought I would hate Scrubs, though. Every time I saw a commercial for it I would think "god, that looks so stupid."

And then I happened to catch the last five minutes of one of the syndicated reruns on Comedy Central. It was the one with the Polyphonic Spree, which made me stop and watch because I love the Spree.

I laughed. A lot.

There was another episode on after that, and I watched it, and I could barely breathe for laughing so hard.

Now I have to watch the Comedy Central reruns and the new ones on NBC every Thursday. I am seriously addicted. I will even watch episodes I've seen before, and I NEVER do that with ANY other show.

Dr Cox is my favorite character. Sarcastic, misanthropic, and liberal! Yay! I also love Carla (Judy Reyes has a quite good singing voice as well) and Jordan.

Besides being one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, however, it is also the show that makes me cry the most. After a dozen tearjerker episodes I started keeping a tally whenever an episode of Scrubs caused me to cry. So far there have been 20. I cried when Carla was saying her goodbye to Nurse Roberts.

When you go to your local hospital, there's always a nurse like Carla there. (Thank God).

Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 07:18 PM by Matsubara
I don't wanna know why she says goodbye to Nurse Roberts!

And yeah, Judy Reyes is great. I loved her performances dealing with post-partum depression.

She vaguely reminds me of Rosario Dawson, which Is why I tacked Rosario onto my post. I loved her as Mimi.

22. for some reason...
Carla reminds me of Janeane Garofalo (I even think she looks a little bit like her). I love Janeane as well--in fact I just saw her perform live about a month ago--so maybe subconsciously that's why I like Carla so much.

And Jordan--I like her because she's just so delightfully evil and manipulative.

17. The character, Elliot, NOT the actress who plays her...
...it was in the episode immediately following the "musical" episode I mentioned earlier.

Honestly, I can't look at the character the same way anymore. She has instantly become less likeable than Kelso, the Janitor and Cox's wife's worst qualities combined.

Can't blame JD, when he dated her, he didn't know, but really, A REPUBLICAN :puke:.

How could the producers of this show do that to a once-loved character?

18. Because of the WASP household she grew up in
Really don't let fictional character bring you down like that, plus her behavior is not one of a Republican, I mean did you hate Michael J. Fox's Alex Keaton because of that. Just enjoy the show, but that is just my two cents.

32. Well, Eliott was abused pretty thoroughly for the first few seasons...
I'll give her a pass on the (largely unseen) freeperism considering what she's been through...

Anyway, I could never hate her after the nurse outfit dream sequence. :)

20. IIRC Sarah Chalke is a liberal
I think she points out on one of the DVD commentaries when he character talks about being a Republican that she is not one herself.

It's also mentioned in one of the commentaries that Rick Schroeder, who played nurse Paul Flowers in a few episodes, is a Republican but I think most people knew that anyway. I get the sense that he must've said something to at least one of the cast members because John McGinley (Dr. Cox) mentions in one of the comentaries that he's "pretty right-wing."

24. hmm.
So Sarah Chalke is a liberal playing a Republican, and John McGinley is a conservative playing a liberal. Interesting... Man, I still love John McGinley. Or did you mean that McGinley was mentioning about Rick Schroeder being Republican, and not himself?

14. This is probably its last year on NBC (at least).
:-(

NBC has it "on the bubble" for renewal which means it more than likely won't be back.

I love 'Scrubs' although this season has been hit or miss, mostly miss, in the big laugh out loud moments.

I have the first four seasons on DVD and whenever I'm in a bad mood I can watch one and it never fails to make me larf. :D

19. I love that show to
I aspire to be a mix between Dr. House and Dr. Cox. My favorite episode is "My Lunch" where they transplant organs that were unknowingly infected with the Rabies virus. Dr. Cox shows his real human side and is crying at the end when he walks out because he blames himself. That is big time, there is simply no better writing on Sitcom TV right now.

21. The follow-up episode has one of my favorite moments in it
when J.D. goes to Dr. Cox and says something along the lines of how much he admires him because "after all these years, you can still take something like this this hard. And that's the kind of doctor I want to be."

25. oh, I forgot to mention
Neil Flynn, who plays the Janitor, is a genius.

(BTW, I've seen the movie Mean Girls four or five times--it's actually surprisingly good--and I had no idea that he was in it (he plays Cady's dad). I mean I started watching Scrubs after seeing that movie and I didn't even recognize him at all, not even in a "Hey, I've seen that guy before!" kind of way.)

It is an excellent, insightful film disguised as a dumb teen comedy.

30. I was actually 26 when I saw it.
I'd actually dismissed it as a "dumb teen comedy" so I didn't want to see it, then one day my parents were in the living room watching it so I thought "I'm just going to watch like five minutes of this just to see how much I'll hate it," ended up watching the rest of it, and ordering it On Demand the next day. I have a tendency to assume I'll hate something and then end up loving it after trying it out.

Also, Tina Fey is a genius as well.
