FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Fort Lauderdale police have apologized after a resident complained that two of the department's horses defecated on the beach.
In an e-mail sent to a Broward County commissioner, a Fort Lauderdale woman said that two officers on horseback rode from the street to the shoreline on April 4, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. The officers let their horses defecate, then turned and rode back to the street, according to the e-mail.
"I was appalled, disgusted, and fear for my and the health of all who enjoy our beautiful beach of Fort Lauderdale," the e-mail said.
Police executive officer Robert Carter reported back to city officials that the officers rode their horses to the shoreline to acclimate the animals to various environmental and physical conditions.
"They were completely unaware that one or both of the horses defecated and they offered sincere apologies," Carter said in his report.
Carter said officers and public works crews routinely clean up after the horses.
