There was just an earthquake in Seattle

3.2 on Richter Scale. Totally felt it...me & mr heddi sitting on the couch watching Blind Date when strange shaking occured. Water in fish tank sloshed around, moved from far end of the apartment to right under us then went away.

FRIGHTENING. Just appeared on the USGS website. When we first looked it wasn't there. I sent in a report of what happened AS SOON as it happened, and like 2 minutes later the official report came up on the site that there was an earthquake

a 3.2 is just sorta fun to me nowadays. I've lived in the SF Bay area for 20 years now.

Don't worry... that's actually a pretty small one. Just enough to get your attention. I'd be more worried about that big volcano in your back yard ;)

2. It was really....exciting

(for lack of a better word)...i felt a small 'tremmor" in South Carolina once...maybe a 1.0 or less..lasted for 3 seconds.

This was..a JOLT! At first we thought it was either neighbors running upstairs or a truck on the street below us...but it kept up and got STRONGER and sort of moved across the floor---started out on the far side of the apartment, but ended right under us. The couch was really moving.

Nothing fell off the shelves, but my fish are looking shaken :)

13. Old So Cal girl myself

Growin' up I've rocked and rolled a few times.

One time I was about 9 (late 60's early 70's in Long Beach) I was already in bed and all the sudden stuff started falling off the shelves in my room. I was to scared to cry out and when the shaking stopped I was too afraid to set foot on the ground. I don't recall the measurement of that one but I do remember what a 5.2 feels like and the one when I was 9 y/o was every bit as strong.

Then there was that 7.1 in ??? Northridge I think it was, In 1971 or 72. That's the largest earthquake I've felt.

Now I live in Tornado country :eyes:

4. well at first...

it was on the other side of our living room...and we're used to feeling slight vibrations from traffic below us (we're on the 4th floor overlooking a major street)...but after it hadn't gone away in like a millisecond, and it got stronger, and moved across the room, we figured it was an earth quake...

11. I don't mean to belittle your fear. . .

but after 50 years in South California I've felt my share of temblors. Of course, there are different types of quakes, the most frightening of which is the jolt sort you just experienced. Rolling quakes are kind of fun, but in all instances, they are only fun in retrospect. As they're occurring it may seem only a slight quake but you just never know when what starts out small will suddenly take a turn for the worse. Scary as they come. . . but I tell you, I'll take the occasional 'quake over tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards.

12. oh I'm not scared at all

I'm seething with excitement and am emailing everyone I know to let them know that I felt a quake!!! Aside from the one in S.C., which again was just tiny, this is the FIRST real EQ we've felt. And you're right--I'd have been mighty freaked out if it lasted any longer than it did...5 seconds was enough for me to get my 'water legs' ha ha.

I hear stories from my aunt--she lives in Redlands CA and she tells me all the time about the very frequent quakes she feels, and that she learned many many years ago that they're nothing to get excited about, unless they're something to get excited about

It was fun. Now I can't sleep. I want to stay up all night and watch local TV coverage like a total goon.... :)

16. when did you move to Seattle?

Must have been just after the 28 Feb 2001 Nisqually quake, which was pretty substantial, although it caused really minimal damage.

25. There is lava associated with Andesitic volcanoes

but it's nothing to worry about. Just like St Helens, the thing to worry about is debris flows, and sudden liquification of glaciers etc...

right outside the perimeter.

26. They've got a pretty good lehar warning system in place

and even do drills in the towns and villages near the slopes and foothills.

It would be a shame to lose those majestic glaciers, though.

9. A 3.2?

I am really surprised you felt that. The epicenter appears to be on the eastern margin of the Kitsap Penninsula, but was 48 kms deep. I wouldn't be surprised to see the USGS upgrade the Richtor magnitude slightly.

10. we felt it alright

the water in my fish tank (29g) was sloshin' all about. POor fishies...they probably got it worse than me...I think if they had the ability to crawl into a corner and assume the fetal position, they would be doing that right now :)

So to ease their fear, I just gave them extra helping of dried worms. That'll make anyone's gray day turn sunny :)

I am just surprised, most quakes under about 4.0 happen and people don't even notice unless 1) they're right at the epicenter or 2) the focus is really shallow. In the case of this quake, neither of those two conditions happened, which is why I suggested that the USGS might upgrade their initial magnitude slightly :-)
