It's funny (in an omg I'm gonna be sick sort of way) how this sort of behavior is endemic in all racial/religious groups. I've personally seen Catholics react this way about Protestants, whites about most other ethnic groups but especially blacks, russians about asians, jews about virtually every other ethnic group, etc. While I have not seen it personally, I know Greeks and Turks fucking despise each other. I know there are some other ethnic groups that are hypergolic when you bring the two together. And that 17 year old Iraqi girl who was stoned to death, it was about her fuckwit relatives not liking her dating a muslim kid.

My maternal grandmother was german and a radical catholic. My aunt rebelled against her by marrying a black guy. The reaction was similar to what you heard on the tape here. My grandfather didn't care one way or the other. One of the neighbor families growing up had a jewish wife and a catholic husband. Christ, the tales I heard about the wife's grandmother. She acted like taking the children to an easter service was like sacrificing them to moloch. "What a hypocrite! She didn't even bother to have tickets at temple for passover and she tells me I'm not raising them right!" Sheesh!

Somehow we got spared that kind of grief, which is surprising given the amount of prejudice in our family.

Up until my generation my family was very Jewish too. My mother was forced to come home from University of Colorado at Boulder to Case Western Reserve in Cleveland because she was seriously seeing a non-Jew and they were close to getting engaged. Fortunately the attitudes have changed a little in my family now and many of the people my age have married outside the religion although I know from comments I have heard there are some ethnic groups that certain of my relatives still consider unacceptable. Nothing I heard on this prank shocks me really. Saddens me, but doesn't surprise me

11. I've encountered something like this before

Not too long after I mustered out of the service, I started dating a Japanese girl, American citizen, so were her parents, beautiful girl. Anyway, her parents were very strict traditionalists and blew a gasket when they found out about me. There was no way in hell they were going to sit by and let their daughter marry a white dude.

I departed the scene soon after, there was no way in hell I could see to salvage it. :(

13. Such ignorance

A friend of mine is Russian with his mom from the west of the FUSSR and his dad from the east. He was dating a 2nd generation American chinese girl and his parents went through the roof. They specifically had a very poor opinion of chinese. Didn't help that she proved to be an unbalanced moonbat but that's the risk you run not just with chinese and not just with women but humans in general. His second long-term girlfriend was american by german extraction and she ended up having her own subtle moonbattery behaviors that manifested over time. That basically holds true with my own experiences. Quite frankly, I've yet to see a single example of a relationship that's healthy. All the ones I know of from personal interaction are either failed or failing.

We're Scot, Irish, English, German, French, Spanish, and possibly some other things in there as well. There are Jews, Protestants, agnostics, atheists, optimists. pessimists, and Methodists in my family. I'm sure if you went far enough back, there may be some Catholics in there somewhere too. Basically the only thing we have in common is we're fiercely loyal yet hate each other and drink too much.

I try to remind family members of this whenever one of them starts in on some religion or race or class - my very conservative grandfather yelled at me when I told him when I was 15 that odds are good we have black in our family (I don't know - was just trying to piss him off) and refused to speak to me for a while when I told him that the reason he hated gay people was because they turned him on. On the other hand, he told me right before he died that he respected my fire and that I always stood up for myself and others and wasn't afraid of him.

But yes, I hate this crap. My dad and father in law have both said things about Muslims and how they can't be trusted, etc. so I pointed out that what they said was an example of how the Nazis could convince everyday Germans to ignore the atrocities of the holocaust, and that if Muslims are inherently violent and want to kill us all, then the only solution is either genocide or mass conversion. it took a minute for what I was saying to sink in - and I hope it did - but that the solution of killing them all before they kill us all doesn't make sense and makes us no different from them. I hope they got it.

My dad listens to Limbaugh and spouts this same kind of bullshit. The sad thing is that he used to be a more intelligent and nuanced in his world view but he's embraced the positions like a dittohead to the letter. He says they're all fucking assholes in worshington but somehow the democrats are worse. To hear him talk about Ted Kennedy you'd think the man had personally raped babies on the steps of the Capitol Building. There's so much doublethink involved because he has to fervently believe mutually contradictory "facts."

What you're saying about muslims is exactly the same thing I've told people about this war in general. "Hey, conquering a country with pure military force is easy. You blow away their army and then kill everyone else, down to the dogs and chickens. Do it real Old Testament style, give God a stiffie. Wait, you don't think that will go over well? Then you're going to have to look at doing this the civilized way. Look to the modern-day brits for some lessons there. Or you can do it like the old school brits and see just how they lost their empire." Morons. Fucking Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, acting like war goes as smoothly as a Tom Clancy techno-thriller.

15. I can relate.

My first husband was Jewish. His parents kept insisting I was christian. I kept telling them I was not a christian and would be happy to convert. They didn't hear me. It was just as well, because I started telling them about the fact that their son, that they thought was so wonderful, was sleeping with seven of my girlfriends. So we got a divorce and that relationship didn't last long, obviously. He couldn't understand why I was upset with his running around.

He was quite immature. I couldn't believe how self righteous they were, and they were Reform. They didn't keep kosher!!

Profession and earning potential are a measure of how much the other side brings to the relationship. Sure, a six figure income won't make much of a loveless marriage but hugs and warm fuzzies don't put food on the table in hard times. I don't think it's wrong for family to give their opinions just so long as the opinions are based in reality. "He's Italian" is a poor critique. "He has no visible means of support and seems to be just bumming about" could well be a valid critique. Really, the important "big questions" to ask are the ones that don't really matter much when you're young and in love but are make or break when romance fades and what should be left is warm, enduring affection and mutual respect. They say the number one cause of marriage breakups is money. Got an earful from a friend today about how spendthrift his last wife was, tearing through their savings like the money way free. Mutually compatible religous beliefs are important if the beliefs are strongly held. If you're a casual christian and don't care how things go, you'll do fine with another casual or a nonbeliever. If you're ardent, you really need to be with another ardent christian or butting heads and misery will follow. But again, these are all reasonable questions responsible people should be asking themselves when they're getting married, not something the family should be butting in on and being dicks about. Nothing is more likely to cement opposition and cause a bad marriage than by getting in their business and trying to lay down the law.

Oh well.
