Just finished "Alice's Restaurant"! It was the first time for me.

Gotta tell you, we both loved it. Other than being a great little flick, lots of little revolutionary scenes, an interesting thing occured, as I watched the movie Pete Seeger had a few scenes and I remembered finding his "Songs for the People" http://www.beacham.com/id7.html http://home.earthlink.net/~jimcapaldi/ in my stepdad's record collection WAY back when. I listened to those songs, by myself, at the age of 8. Over and over, I loved that record! That said I'm not sure what I loved about them then but I sure understand it now. That man is a treasure, an American treasure.

I also borrowed my stepdad's Woodie Guthrie records and listened to them until the sun set...Toss in the guitar playing third grade teachers at Quail Hollow Elementary and I suppose it's no surprise that I grew up into a raging Leftie.

1. Have you hear the new version of

Alice's Restaurant? I bought the CD several years ago because I lost my album in a fire.

Guthrie added a new verse. I was SO surprised.

And yes, I'm a huge fan.

2. oh yeah

I am a hardcore here, and recommended this film just before Thanksgiving. One of the coolest things is not just Pete playing himself, but Officer Obie too. Plus, Matthew Broderick's late father playing Ray.

If you are looking to get into more Arlo, get the "Amigo" album on CD.

And... get all the Woody you can. The Library of Congress Recordings, the Mo Asch Recordings, and for a single CD set, "The Dust Bowl Ballads".

Perhaps my best recommendation of all is to read Woody's autobiography "Bound For Glory". It was made into a movie too (nominated for Best Picture Oscar in 1976), but in no way can ever compare to the book, since the book's best part is his childhood, and the movie omits that.

4. While I recently got Billy Bragg/Wilco doing Woody's songs...

...I MUST get some some originals. Every Lefty ought to. Frankly it should speak to the Joe 6-pack folks too.

5. Watched the DVD after

so many years on the DVD player the kids got me for Christmas. Enjoyed it even moreso than the first time I saw it. Love folk music, the Guthries, Pete Seger and all the voices of true America. It struck me how innocent young people were in those times.

6. When I die, I want the piece "Songs to Aging Children"

performed at my service. It stunned me iboth in its simplicity and its beauty.

Normally I'd just give up but I went to a memorial service today that needed some good humanistic music to help the berieved.

Unfortunately the beer has handicapped my googling capabilities.

8. Don't you agree with me that the scene in the cemetary

with dark gray clouds and swirling snow, the gorgeous music in the background and the death of a close friend makes "Songs to Aging Children "very special?

9. Oh I do! The cemetary shot was by far the most moving scene.

Masterful, moving, and cold.

But warm at the same time, the music and the people made it beautiful. While the movie itself wasn't a masterpice, on the cinematography side, the cemetary scene was.
