Tabby cat Quest

I need a new striper. Is there an official "Tabby" breed? Gimme some clues. I know for a fact that the DU is cat country, soooo let me know what ya think, please.

3. Tabby isn't a breed, it's a pattern of marking

Many breeds can be tabby.

But if you're just looking for a pet, a non-purebred is just as good as one with fancy papers. I would suggest visiting your shelter or humane society.

4. Tabby is a Pattern, Not a Breed

The breed that comes to mind when I think "tabby" is Main Coon. MCs come in all coat patterns except Siamese and ticked, but my two Coons were tabbies. Tabby patterns show up in almost all breeds - some Siamese even have stripes - and is a common coat pattern in random bred cats.

I agree with the person who suggested going to a shelter to adopt, and I'll also suggest breed rescue groups. I don't think purebreds are superior in any way to random bred cats - but rescue groups do have cats who are also desperate for good, loving homes.

I'll also suggest not limiting yourself to striped cats, but I am under the control of an unstriped Siamese, three calicos, one black and one grey and white cat and they forced me to type that.

6. A Tabby is a striped cat. They come in many colors

I would also suggest visiting your local shelter or Humane Society and choosing one who chooses you. I know that PetsMart has regular adoption clinics. I take my animals to the vet there and just recently met a woman adopting a tiny grey striped kitten. He was adorable.

This is not necessarily the wont of Tabbies. They are generally pretty outgoing. My present cat is completely black, as was my perfect Rhiannon, but they are as different as day and night. Rhiannon needed to be with me; this one is happy in her little kitty house, on her own, but she had been abandoned, so is due her little idiosyncrasies. You need to find a companion that is right for you. It is not hard, as there are so many out there, looking for good homes. If I was looking for a kitty right now, and my friend agrees with me, I think I would get two, a pair who got along, so they would never be lonely.:shrug:

12. My tabbies seem to have found me

I got one from the shelter, have one as an office cat and found her one night while taking a walk. I have two long hair orange tabbies at home now and both wandered up homeless. I can almost guarantee that if you go to a shelter, you'll find a great tabbie.

16. There is an official "show cat tabby" breed, but you'll find

the best in the animal shelter. When my Fluffy disappeared, I had to go to the shelter to make sure he wasn't there before they would put up a missing pet bulletin. There were so many little tabby kittens it broke my heart, but I couldn't adopt one at that time.
