12. I second that.
In fact, there were two movies made. The one with Jack Nicholson was ok. The more recent one sucked. The book is awesome.

14. that screenplay was hacked with a dull knife
i barely followed the movie, and i had already read the book. maybe they edited it by throwing clips into a hat of something. poor steven king. all attempts to make movies out of his books sucked. 'cept maybe misery.

38. When I first saw it, I was barely constraining my fury...
at how badly Kubrick had fucked with the book when he went and killed off Scatman's character -- that fucking did it for me! I threw what was left of my popcorn at the screen and booed as loudly as I could. :P

Nicholson was so fucking over the top and Shelley Duvall was just annoying as hell. To me, Kubrick made it much more about an boozer having a breadown then a house taking over the soul of a man.

He made the cast of The Shining watch Eraserhead to set the tone, which makes him that much more awesome, haha.

30. He also was a good practical joker.
I remember a story when one reporter tried to interview him in England in the 80s or 90s -- problem was, nobody really knew what Kubrick looked like because he was very low-profile.

The reporter knocked on the door, and Kubrick himself answered, but told the reporter that "Stanley Kubrick" wasn't there at the moment.

BTW, you should probably watch Citizen Kane, if only for the historical context.

As Bull Shannon's mom once said, "Harry, you just can't like everyone."

33. Check this out; a good interpretation of the film.
The Family Of Man by Bill Blakemore; an argument that the film is about the destruction of the American Indian by white settlers.

http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/0052.html

Another site that I just skimmed recently, which incorporates Blakemore's theory:

Also see if you can get a book called Kubrick: Inside A Film Artists's Maze by Thomas Allen Nelson. Discusses SK's films in great detail.

41. Wow, thanks for the BLAKEMORE link.
I've always been in awe of KUBRIK's movie but interpreted it on the level of the individual dude going crazy on his own. Simplistic me. The pile of typed nonsense never fails to chill. But this BLAKEMORE view changes it all.

I was puzzled that KING sponsored a version "faithful" to his book, puzzled to see a totally unentralling t.v. movie.
