What shift do you prefer to work?
I prefer 2nd shift and I worked that for about 5 years before I needed to move on and find better paying work. I now work 3rd shift (10pm to 8am M-F) and while I like the work, I don't like the hours. If you don't keep the same schedule on the weekend and try to be awake when most other people are then you end up dragging ass on Monday trying to get swtiched back around. If you keep the same schedule there is nothing to do on the weekend. I am single, though, so it doesn't hurt me as much to work third than it does some of the other guys I work with. I don't know how I'd do it if I had kids.

1. I'd love to like first, but I don't.
I have worked as a baker for five years and seemed to handle the 5 am to 1 pm or 6 am to 2 pm shift very well. In fact, that is ideal for me but everyone is getting their stuff frozen now so baker jobs are rare, and it's really hard to find those hours. Any later in the morning than that just doesn't work for me for some reason. So generally 2nd shift works the best. 3rd shift I can't handle because I get sick; I don't know why but I get faint and nauseous. :hi:

4. I don't like 1st shift
It seems like my natural body rhythm doesn't agree with 1st shift hours. I thought I might be able to change that, but I was unable to. It took me 2 months to get used to thirds and I still have trouble getting out of bed when I need to sometimes.

2. When I worked at a movie theater I used to work 2pm to 10pm...
That was perfect. I could sleep in and party after my shift. I did work at a photo lab once from 11pm to 11am. That was fucking torture.

11. You could always take up truckin'
That's what I do. Some companies will sponsor your schooling if you agree to work for them for about a year.

I wish I didn't have to do the kind of work that I do, but I don't have any other skill that would pay me the kind of money that I earn from being a trucker. Hell, I don't have any other skill that would make me the kind of money that I NEED.

Unfortunately, I have to suck the corporate teat like most Americans.

I'm working on wresting the control of our government from its corporate masters, but I think it's going to be a long time coming.

My uncle does it... Reasonable money, and you don't have some management wonk constantly breathing down your neck. I don't have kids, wife, or a house. I would do it if motorized vehicles didn't scare the shit out of me.

22. It's not bad
And it will always be needed if we are to continue our current way of life and not return to the horse and wagon. So you would never be hurting for a job unless you screwed up real bad (DUI, felony, major accident).

31. Most truckers do not pay for fuel
They are given a company debit card that they use at the truck stops. The truckers that do pay for fuel are owner operators and they own their trucks. They are compensated with a much higher rate than company drivers to cover expenses and they usually get a fuel surcharge on top of that because of the high fuel prices.

23. Third. I love graveyard shift.
I'm on it right now and have been for the past three months, I love it. It's just me and one other guy, who happens to be one of my best friends, in the entire building. Many, many perks come with this. I hate first shift, I hate not getting any sleep and I hate the sun, this is best for me. The 15% shift differential is an added bonus as well.

24. I guess there are some benefits at my job as well
from working third shift. I drive a truck for a living. That means that when I'm out driving there is very little traffic. The position is secure because not many people want to work third shift- I don't have to worry about being bumped off of my run by a senior driver. The weigh stations on my route are closed at night- no hassle from the D.O.T. man. Unfortunately, I do not get a shift premium.

32. I guess it depends on age as well....
I've worked 3rd shift since 1995. Early on, flipping hours was no big deal for me. Nowadays, it wears me out. I'm moving to 1st shift next week and I can't wait. I get to tear down the cardboard and foil on my windows and sleep at night.

34. I prefer first shift only because my internal clock has become
accustomed to waking up every day by 630am - even on weekends. At heart I'm a night owl but once I had kids I had to adjust to their clocks.

I did try working a 4pm-12m shift a couple years ago but it didn't work out well.

My husband also works off shifts as a firefighter. He originally worked 8a-6pm two days, two days off then 6pm-8am two days. Now he works 24 hour shifts - 1 shift then 4 days off then another shift then two days off.

It is a better shift for our family but not really a better shift for him, I think he'd prefer his original schedule.

40. I like 2nd shift
sometimes it gets annoying not being around at night while everyone else is home watching TV or hanging out or getting ready to go out but I could always catch up with them after.

I work second shift, have been for the past five years. It seems to fit me. I am not a morning person.

41. I prefer 2nd shift.
I cannot get up early and I also find it hard to go to bed early. So I'm majorly tired when I work first shift. Of course now, I'm in a long stretch of unemployment, and I'm looking at jobs in first or second shift--though of course, most of the type of jobs that fit my skills are first shift.
