You East Coasters think you're tough?

All last week, every time I turned on the news I heard a bunch of crying about how cold it was in the Northeast. "IT'S TEN DEGREES IN NEW YORK CITY!!" "IT'S TWO DEGREES IN BOSTON!!" I can see that being a problem if you are homeless or don't have heat, and it really was cold in Maine and VT and NH. But fer Pete's sake, the air temperature here today was 13 BELOW when I got up today, and the wind chill was 35 below. I think the highest the temperature got here today was 8 below.

You know what we call that in Minnesota? JANUARY. And you don't hear us all over the TV whining about it, either. We put on an extra pair of socks and we go about our business.

Okay, I feel better now. :)

some kind of freak show to improve ratings. They make every little storm sound like End Times.
Ignore the TV, they are only selling stuff.
The real people can handle it, just like Minnesotans, we call it January too.

5. It was 63 today

I mean, this morning, it was in the mid-50s and I had to take off my shorts and put on long pants it was so cold!

10. You can't get used to -35 wind chills.

I was outside today in sweatpants with no longjohns or anything under them, a sweatshirt, my winter coat, a hat, and gloves. I had on one pair of thin cotton socks--I don't own anything warmer than that so if I need to I double up. I don't have any boots, either. I'll give you the house insulation thing, though, but only because I live in an old farmhouse that was built when people needed really good insulation to stay warm.

Anyway, if you're more worried about wearing fashionable pointy-toed boots than staying warm, you deserve the frostbitten toes. :)

they do make an awful fuss about it. I have not needed my boots yet this year.

13. Yup, Minnesotans, Wisconsonites, Michiganders -

most of you folks do well up here, too - today it's only 48 below but it went to 56 below yesterday. We'll be a bit warmer by Tuesday - predicting only 35 below by then.................

Some long johns, an extra pair of socks, Sorel boots and a good knit cap go a loooooooooooooooooooong way in this weather!!



Good weather to sit in front of the fire and read a good book - or play on DU!

On edit: I admit, I have been WAY colder in Florida and Alabama than I get here - we have zip humidity, even the snow is so dry that you can just brush it off your coat. And very, very little wind!

17. You're partly right - I am surprised at the weeniness here in NYC

people bitchin' about the cold when this old WI boy is finally putting on his coat...

NYC and Boston people are weenies.

I remember many a wineter as a kid standing outside, waiting for the bus, when it was below zero, and usually at the -50 mark or lower with wind chill. Never complained about it; it just was. And we never saw it on the news.

BUT - please note on the East coast, especially along Maine, and in much of new England, the cold is just about as bitter and nasty as MN and WI. But then, those areas get the news, either. :-)

And also remember that one reason the cold temperatures, even though not as cold as the midwest or other areas, CAN be really nasty in places like Boston and NYC because so many actually walk to get to the subway, go grocery shopping, etc., and DO spend a lot of time exposed to the elements, as opposed to walking out to a car, possibly in a garage, and being sheltered from the elements except for the short walk from the car to work, or the car to the mall doors, etc.

So there are two sides to this coin.

But I will still add that the NYC people are weeny-butts about the cold. Sissy little complainers.

19. Cold??? What about rain?

All the years I lived in NYC, I could never get used to the weenies who couldn't walk through a light drizzle without two layers of waterproof clothing, hip boots, and a huge umbrella.

Then they'd still skip from awning to awning, or just huddle under the awnings or in subway entrances. I knew people who actually had all the through lobbies in the area scoped out just to avoid a few drops.

and even in rain, they fear getting wet.

I think it is because of all the high $$$ fashion clothes. You know, it is not cool to wear a hat, or a hood, or whatever.

Temp = -5F Windchill = -24

Wearing longjohns, jeans, turtle neck and sweat shirt. Keep the house at 66degrees during the winter to save on the fuel bill.

Had to go out in the wind a few times today. Took precautions, layered and didn't let flesh get exposed to the wind for more than five minutes at a time.....

all in all...not terrible.
