BOULDER CREEK — Sheriff's deputies are investigating the theft of a golden retriever in the Santa Cruz Mountains as a possible terrorist incident after finding animal rights group propaganda where the dog was last seen.
Randy Chapel got home from a two-week trip to Europe last week and reported his dog missing, his garage door bowed and the lock busted, and an unusual sticker pasted to the side door of the garage.
The sticker — "Abuse an animal, go to jail" — piqued the interest of two sheriff's deputies trained as terrorist liaison officers, who said the incident could be the work of fringe activists unhappy about how the dog was treated.
The stickers are produced and sold by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, a national nonprofit based in Sonoma County that fights for animal rights through the legal system. But the defense fund is not being blamed for the dog's disappearance, deputies said.
Lisa Franzetta, spokeswoman for the group, said this week that the group doesn't condone illegal behavior.
"We certainly wouldn't advocate the theft of someone's animal," Franzetta said, pointing out anyone could buy the stickers, priced at $4.99 for two sheets of four stickers, online. "We send out thousands of those stickers every year"
Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Marsh, a terrorist liaison officer, said it's possible an animal rights activist outside the official group acquired the sticker.
"Perhaps somebody has some more radical views that they acted on. That's a possibility," Marsh said.
