I don't know ho wmany of you know the folk trio "Schooner Fare" but they're some of my favorite musicians. Tom Rowe's death is a great loss.
Tom Rowe, a musician best known as the bassist with the popular Maine folk band Schooner Fare, died Saturday. He was 53 and had been suffering from throat cancer.
"Tom has, had, a brilliant ear for both playing and singing, and he was a tenor who played bass," his Schooner Fare colleague Steve Romanoff said Sunday. "A very rare combination. He played brilliant bass and sang the high parts."
Schooner Fare - Rowe, Romanoff and Romanoff's brother Chuck Romanoff - played together for 28 years, and performed across North America.
This past December, the weekend before Rowe entered the hospital, the trio performed at The Barns at Wolf Trap, a renowned venue in Virginia. The band has played at The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and in cities across the country and in Canada.
