One hot July day nearly 40 years ago, two planes collided in the skies above Hendersonville.

The Piedmont Flight 22 disaster claimed 82 lives and etched July 19, 1967, in the minds of many local residents.

Better get out my typewriter, I was there. Clothes were hanging in trees, a home's roof had a hole in it where a passenger fell through, charred bodies every where. The crash was right next to a summer camp for children. Years later I went back to NC for a visit and met my cousin's wife who told me she had abeen a child at the camp when that happened. I have a scrapbook of the newspaper article of that day. The Secretary of the Navy was on that plane flying to DC to begin his new job.

On July 19, 1967, in the skies above Hendersonville, N.C., one of the deadliest mid-air collisions in American aviation history took place. Eighty-two people were killed in an accident that the National Transportation Safety Board ruled to be one pilot's fault.

Years later, a Spartanburg man is on a mission to prove what he says really happened that warm July afternoon, that a series of events culminated in two planes being in the same space at the same time, that the NTSB made a mistake with its findings.

His quest is to tell the real story of Piedmont Flight 22, of the Cessna 310 and of the 82 men, women and children who died in that collision in the sky.
