Dammit! My friggen earbuds have a short in the wire!
 it seems like every 6 months I'm out buying a new pair of earbuds, why do they have to make the wires on these things so damn thin that if you even look at them wrong they will get a short. I hate having to shell out $25-$40 all the time for these stupid things. I would buy a pair of cheap-o ones but they have crap sound and don't fit in my ear properly. It just pisses me off that nothing is built to last anymore

1. Sure it's the wire?
Try twistin' the plug. If it snaps and crackles, take it out, squirt it with WD-40, then put it back in and twist it some more. That'll clean any crud on the plug and/or jack. It doesn't take much to affect the sound; usually, you can't even see it.

4. I'm pretty sure the wire is shot...
the left side speaker works fine and the other will only work if I jiggle the wire right where it connects to the ear piece and cuts right out again

2. Havent had any problems with my Sony ear-canal headphones
Got em from Radioshack for $42. They sound good but the higher bass tones sound kinda muddy. When it comes to electronics, you get what you pay for. A really good set of ear-canal headphones cost from $60 to well over $100.

My friend has these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106176 and they sound awsome on my COWON Jetaudio U2 mp3 player! Highs are a little bright, but the bass and overall sound is amazing for the price!

5. I get frustrated with these damn things because the wires are so fragile...
granted I don't exactly treat them with kid gloves but I expect them to hold up under normal every day uses. I don't want to drop $100 on a good pair if the same thing is going to happen to them

3. I've gone through at least five of those things in the last two years
they seem to be pretty fragile. They are Sonys brand, so maybe I have bad luck
