Going to Lake Tahoe/San Fran this winter. Is there anything to do out there?

San Francisco has EVERYTHING...and moderately nice winters, as well.

I am going to try to teach my 2 1/2 year old how to ski.

In that case, may I suggest a ski resort?

The obvious one is Heavenly, but that's often crowded and a tad overpriced. I much prefer Sierra-at-Tahoe. Smaller, family friendly...and a really long bunny hill. ;)

I was looking at Squaw Mt...they have a kid's area called the Papoose children's area.

11. Is that North Shore?

Sierra-at-Tahoe is South Shore, technically in a town called Twin Bridges, but definitely accessible from South Lake Tahoe.

My uncle used to work on the ski patrol there, his girlfriend is a nurse there during the winter and their dog is one of the avalanche dogs. :)

14. Squaw Mtn is VERY expensive!!

the North Shore is much better IMO

Donner Ski Ranch has one week a year they actually roll back prices to when they opened in the 50s

15. Might I suggest Kirkwood?

It isn't the zoo that is Squaw and it has great terrain for beginners.

3. that's quite a spread. 4-5 hour drive between the two

but Tahoe has great skiing if there is snow and the lake is lovely. Casinos too if you're into it as noted above.

what's not to like in SF? great restaurants, art galleries and only an hour from world class wine country :bounce:

9. And for the kids

the Exploratorium, aquarium, planetarium, museums (not sure if they still are but they used to be free on the first Wed. of the month), Ghiaradelli square, pier 39 for the sea lions.

seriously, you won't have any lack for things to do. just hope you don't get snowed in at Tahoe. When it snows there in winter it snows several feet at a time.

17. The Christmas decor in the stores around Union Square is worth checking out

if you're into that type of thing. I always like cocktails in the St. Francis Hotel that time of year.

San Francisco is a great walking city year round. Or take a Cable Car from Market Street to Ghirardelli Square, then walk up Columbus Avenue to North Beach for an espresso. You can tour Alcatraz, cruise around the bay, walk the Golden Gate Bridge, go to these museums: de Young, SFMOMA, or Legion of Honor (and several others - there's even a cartoon museum). There's Union Street Shopping, Chinatown, Haight/Ashbury, The Castro....

And if that doesn't interest you, just up north is hiking in Muir Woods, Mt Tamalpais and the Golden Gate Recreation area. Cross the bay and you're in Berkeley. And if you like wine we have a little valley called Napa just a stone's throw away.

Yeah, there's stuff to do out here.
