I'm going to a Catholic wedding. Pray for me.
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 05:44 PM by trof
Mass and the whole drill.
Probably last an hour.
And it doesn't start until 7 p.m.

The reception is at an Alabama gulf coast landmark, The Grand Hotel in Point Clear on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay.

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/travel/ptlal-grand-hotel-marriott-resort-golf-club-and-spa/

I went to fraternity spring formals there in the late 50s.
During the War of Northern Aggression ;-) it was converted to a hospital. There is a Civil War cemetery on the premises where Union and Confederate dead are buried.

We're staying at the hotel that night.
They will bus us the half hour or so from the hotel to the church and back to the hotel.
We'll enjoy drinks and hors d'ouvres for the hour or so it will take for the wedding photos to be done.
Then the dinner reception starts.
Just about at my bedtime.
It's gonna be a l-o-n-g night.
:eyes:

1. So...no commiseration?
No "Aw, trof. Too bad."?
No huggie smilies?
No "Ya poor bastid."?

OK, it's a night of free food and booze.
Gotta look on the bright side.
But jeez...a 7 o'clock wedding?
At night?

I have brought a book to various religious functions I've had to attend.

3. Oy, bring some Red Bull, you're going to need it
although at my wedding the priest (who was drunk) knocked over the unity candle and caught the table cloth thingie on fire. That was sort of entertaining. Maybe you'll get a drunk priest.

6. Oh yeah?
How about a vomiting bridesmaid? Happened at my wedding. It was on a Friday evening, and it had been in the high 90s all day, with typical New Orleans humidity. I think the poor woman was hit with delayed onset heat exhaustion.

She was fine by the time we decamped for the reception.

On the ride over, one of my groomsmen managed to finish off an impressive stash of alcohol that was in the limo. Today, he is the coolest Catholic priest in North Carolina!

Wonder if it is a Nuptial Mass...

They are usually scheduled in the AM or late afternoon, i think.

Hotel looks great. Reminds me of one in the San Diego area.

Have fun.

20. Oh yeah. The one bright spot.
Based on the reputation of the Grand Hotel the food will probably be great too.

14. To make it more interesting, I would suggest bursting into a hearty chorus of Ave Maria, just before
they issue Communion. I think that always puts just the right touch on any ceremony! Good luck! :hi:

One of my ex-girlfriends did that...

It KILLS me to this day.

Edited to add: What made it even funnier is that she was serious. Not... The brightest bulb in
the marquee... But, certainly the funniest.

25. I survived a Catholic wedding
and spent nine years in it. I should've known it was going to turn out bad when her relatives had already drained four kegs before we even got to the reception.

This will be a cakewalk. Just be thankful you're not the groom.

26. My one & only experience with a Catholic wedding was
a hoot.

There were very few Catholics there so of course none of us knew what to do. The priest was no help at all. But, there were three nuns up front. Thank gawd they were there. When they stood, we all stood. Unfortunately, those of us that were more than 2 or 3 rows back (which includes 90% of us) couldn't see when they sat down. So you had this bizarre, almost wave-like effect as row after row realized that we were supposed to be seated. By the time the last row sat, it was time to stand again.

Have fun & get your ticket price in booze & food.

27. Ugh. I hate those.
I had to go to one last summer. I just wanted to scream. It was a totally sexist ceremony, including a bunch of crapola about Eve being made from Adam's rib. Why do people subject themselves to this mythology?

Every time I set foot in a church, I get a major case of the willies. I find the while thing incredibly depressing and, well, just GROSS.

28. Might be some changes...
Last Catholic wedding I went to, there were altar GIRLS...the cantor was female, and the sermon was read by a woman, too.
Only time the priest (as opposed to priestess) stepped in was when it was time for the
"Do you, ________, take this....." bit.

Amazingly laid back and relaxed...friendly, in fact.
:wow:
