Me I grow it in my parents garden, it's funny they'll be slaving away on their galaxy of lettuce, onion, carrots, peas, cucumber's and everything else under the sun. Then there's me tending away ever so carefully at my four basil plants.

1. I love basil!
I don't grow it, but I love it on pasta. Sometimes if there's nothing else in the house I'll eat elbow macaroni with salt, pepper, margarine and basil. YUM!!

2. I grew a dozen plants inside during the winter months
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 05:07 PM by Marianne
and now I have lots and lots and lots of it. I have harvested two crops already by pinching off the top growth--it is really bushy now. I make pesto but leave out the pine nuts, and freeze it in ice cube trays--I love that stuff.

3. Yours truly!
I have basil bushes! This year we had drought weather and no frosts in So Cal so my plants lasted all year long. They are huge. As they die, I take the branches and make potpourri.

8. I love basil
Had just a nice salad this evening (Tomatoes with fresh Mozarella and home-grown basil(on my balcony), onions and garlic. A simple vinaigrette (french wine-vinegar and Olive Oil) to go with it.

Definitely my diner/starter of choice.

15. Basil good - Thai Sweet Basil better!
Tear some basil leaves and serve them on top of freshly sliced tomatoes with mozzarella, olive oil and black pepper! Yum.

But Thai sweet basil is amazing - gives Thai food that unique flavour. Can't get enough of it!

17. We grow basil year round with a grow-light
Keep the plant by the window, and in the winter extend the light-hours in the morning and evening with a timer.

Had one pot going for 3 years, before it got infested with those demon white-flies :-(, but we started over :-)

Nothing like fresh pesto in February! Who needs ice cube pesto?

18. I used to keep basil growing in water in the kitchen
But the cat went after it. It gave an aroma to the kitchen that reminded me of my aunt's house when I was a kid. When I visited Sicily, the same aroma pervaded people's homes.
There is nothing like fresh pesto. It makes one feel refreshed afterwards.

19. HELP!!! My Basil is wilting!
I grew a HUGE one last year on my reed desk (southen exposure). It was fragrant company until the day some bugs took up residence... :-( I got another one from the grocery store and it simply refused to grow. The stems turned brown at their bases and the leaves just wilted as each plant keeled over :-( Being the suspicious type, I wondered if it had been helped along with some chemical intervention. Can't keep selling those plants if they're so easy to grow at home. Next I got a pot full going from seeds. They were pale and tasteless... and then the bugs came back. THIS TIME I got one marked "Bio" from the health food store, made a batch of pesto (YUMMY) and today I notice the stems getting brown at the bottom and they're wilting and keeling over AGAIN!!! :-( :-( :-( HEEEEEELP!!!! Anyone got some growing tips?

20. There is nothing like fresh basil. I keep meaning to grow some
I make homemade pesto sauce, which is so simple and the best thing on earth to eat, just mixed with hot pasta. I sprinkle a little fresh-grated romano cheese over it, to give it an extra flavor kick. :loveya:

22. Here's one of the best basil recipes
Chop some basil, garlic tomatoes and rip up a bunch of brie cheese. Pour olive oil over it and leave it at room temperature for a couple of hours. Cook up some pasta, drain it and mix in the basil, etc. Serve with fresh parmesan or romano cheese. It's incredible.
