1. Kiwis
check 'em out

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Jungle/7751/kiwi.html

They are the most bizzare feathered critter I ever seed.

Screech like the Debil and run like Groucho...

4. I love kiwis!
Our zoo has a special room for their kiwis, since they're only active at night. Thanks for the site!

8. Saw (wild) North Island and Stewart Island Brown Kiwis last month
Edited on Fri Jan-23-04 07:27 PM by jpak
The Stewart Island Kiwis are active in the day.

I also saw some most of the endangered birds in New Zealand (and the world).

Including:

Takahe's: huge flightless rails with brilliant blue plumage (once thought to be extinct)

Saddlebacks: the last of the New Zealand unique wattle-birds.

Stitch Birds: extremely endangered honeycreepers.

Yelloweyed Penguins: world's rarest penguin

and a whole bunch more....

:)

2. Parrotlets! I love those little birds.
They're tiny parrots--only 4" tall. But they seem to think they're huge birds; they're feisty and can be little attack birds. They're also little sweethearts who love you to scratch their little heads. And they're so adorable, just too cute for words! The photo in my sig is of my parrotlet, Grace, who is now 10 months old.

5. Why, Owls of course!
My favorites being my Eastern Screech owl friends Owly and Scarlet. I was fortunate enough to see a tawny frogmouth at the Brownsville Zoo. I got a great picture of it.

7. Blue Heron -- Mrs. V. named them "Ichabod."
Also garden variety seagulls and sparrows. These are my absolute favorites. I also love ducks of all kinds and Canadian geese.

9. Kea Nestor Notabilis
It's from New Zealand, and it's a beautiful emerald green with orange underneath its wings. It is a cheeky bird, will pull out tent pegs, and the clothes off your clothesline. There was one in my local pet shop and if you got close to its cage, it would try to grab you or your clothes or anything and pull it into the cage. They are very intelligent, but a pain in the butt

10. They're pretty damn strong, too.
They'll pull car antennas out, drop rocks and hammers from heights...

interesting birds.

11. Had several encounters with Keas
One almost ripped the windshield wipers off my rental car. Had a hard time shooing it away.

They are big, bold and fast.

Probably not the best pets either...

12. From what I hear...
...they can be outstanding pets. Like most other parrots, they're intelligent, affectionate, and entertaining.

I imagine a Kea would require a similar environment to a macaw or cockatoo -- thick wrought iron cage bars, plenty of interaction, and clearly defined limits -- if the kea thinks IT's the boss, watch out.
