Poll question: Why don't men wear makeup/lipstick/et al?

Why must women go through the process of buying, putting on, wiping off, and repeating chemicals to put on their faces?

I think it's barbaric.
I know some men who wear makeup. Nail polish. Panty hose. They're mostly like me, not gender confused, they just don't give a crappe.

Generally speaking though, if makeup was a good thing men would be the ones wearing it. Likewise skirts and high heels, which I also avoid.

If you don't like it, don't wear it. But don't give this bull crap sweeping statements about how "barbaric" it is. A lot of people, men and woman, wear make up by free and volitional choice, because they enjoy doing so. If you' don't, then I definitely wouldn't want you do to something you don't enjoy.

6. I know men who wear makeup

to hide something they don't want to show. They don't apply heavy foundations or anything, but they add a light touch. And it is not just a one time occurance; they put it on everyday.

There was this co-worker I worked with that put on makeup to hide the "hickies" from his girlfriend. :-)

I once wore makeup for a play one time. It felt liberating :-)

But why don't guys wear makeup? Mostly because other people would think they were "le femme" or "gay".

I was told I was naturally so devastatingly gorgeous that I was a distraction when wearing make-up. So much so that I might cause car-wrecks, volcano eruptions, blindness or hairy palms if I continued.

Scan back a little ways (stop when you get to the part with little bows on the guy's shoes) and you'll see heavily made up males and females actually taking poison to be pretty.

Or maybe you'd rather go lateral. OK, I don't know the name of the culture, but think Natl Geo covers with brightly painted smiling males.

But! Do be Careful when coming back or you'll end up with males in eyeliner and females in tailored power suits.

In my readings on pressure-treated wood, I came across a huge body of literature on women using arsenic as eye makeup. It's kinda gray and sparkly, so I guess it made a halfway decent eye shadow if you can get past the part about dropping dead if you stuck a brush in your eye.

Which explains why so many women used arsenic to off their husbands--a little dab of eye shadow in the old man's coffee and you were an eligible young widow. And lots of patent medicines contained arsenicals, so the tests for arsenic were often inconclusive.

13. The contractors would shit if I did

I can think of four things I'd fix if "public opinion" allowed it--the permanent dark circles under my eyes (too many late-nights), my eyelids are naturally mauve, there's a big gap in my left eyebrow where the hair fell out (too much exposure to parts cleaner) and my lips are wine color. Basically, I don't wear anything but I look like I do. I'd probably fix the white-spotty skin tone too.

But I deal with manly men--roofers, framers, remodelers--who'd freak out if I fixed that stuff.

I've tried it in the "privacy of my own home" and I look a hell of a lot better with really light makeup than I do without it, but for now I must refrain from going out in public that way. The strange thing is, I look more made-up with nothing on my face. (Which sounds strange, but it's true.)

I'm hoping the Metrosexual movement becomes mainstream like men's pierced ears did a few years back.

I think the best, can't do without it makeup product is: Neutragena Correcting Yellow undereye concealer. It zaps tired eyes -- It's like 8 hours sleep in a tube!

I gave up wearing daily makeup several years ago. I'm just too lazy; don't want to spend the extra time in the morning. Now, most of the guys I know are used to having an even more streamlined morning routine than mine (and I take about 15 minutes to shower, dress, and grab my coffee) - I can't see them taking an extra 20 minutes to primp and powder. Special occasions, sure. I've no objection to men in makeup, I just don't think most would be motivated to use it daily any more than I am.

And foundations ruin people's skin. I'm sure there are some that don't, but most of the people I know who've made wearing foundation a habit HAVE to wear it after a few years, because their skin looks awful. Vicious cycle. I've never been able to stand it, and my skin looks pretty good for 44.
