a timeline of job seeking

18 - "this job pays minimum wage. when can you start? we have a training class at 2 pm. you can be on the floor by 8 am tomorrow"

25 - "sorry to hear about those assholes at Wee, Cheetham, and Howe. go over to Dynamegacorp on west monroe, they need someone to moisten a seat for two weeks and we can line up something better for you."

32 - "you drove 135 miles to get here for the interview? well, stay for the christmas party, you can meet the team. the job starts jan 15 at the plant 25 miles from your house"

37 - "we'll need 9 references: 3 coworkers, 3 supervisors, and 3 mentors. why did you leave your last job 4 years ago?"

3. I feel your pain. Job seeking really sucks.

What especially chaps me is when employers ask you to come for an interview, esp. over a long distance, and they've already decided who's going to get the job...and it isn't you.

4. i've been giving a lot of thought

to my conceptions of work, what the culture expects, and how invasive society's programming is.

i've internalized many notions i had no hand in creating: puritan work ethic; the supposed merit of gainful employment (aside from getting paid, i see no real value in employment for a large organization); and the devaluation of leisure time.

the prospect of just doing nothing becomes less and less frightening.

i have a lot of time to consider these things.

I too internalized a lot of those notions.

If I didn't have to work, I sure wouldn't. If I was bored out of my gourd, I'd do some volunteer work.
